Channel 4
Sketch Cleared By Ofcom
The Channel 4 programme Bremner, Bird and Fortune has been
cleared by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom after viewers complained over an
"offensive" reference to missing Madeleine McCann.
Ofcom received 63 complaints over a the Rory Bremner sketch
that suggested politicians might use the disappearance to win an election.
The watchdog said it recognised the sensitivity of the subject matter.
However, it ruled that the main point of the sketch was to ridicule
politicians and not the McCann family.
The sketch featured two men in a pub discussing some of the
tactics Prime Minister Gordon Brown might use to secure his re-election.
One of the characters said: "I don't trust Gordon Brown... I wouldn't be
surprised if the night before the election he went on television and said
'look what I found' and held up little Maddie McCann."
Ofcom said it considered Bremner, Bird and Fortune to be a long-established
satirical series that often engaged with controversial subjects.
"The idea that politicians might be insensitive enough to attempt to exploit
the tragedy surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann to their
advantage was consistent with the general purpose of the sketch," Ofcom said
in its report.
"Whilst perhaps painful for some viewers to have been reminded of Madeleine
McCann's disappearance, we concluded the suggestion that politicians might
consider cynically using such an event to their advantage justified the
inclusion of such a reference in this satirical sketch."

Scottish Commission Criticises London
A report on the decline of TV production in Scotland has been
critical of a "heavily-centralised and London-based" industry.
A review by the Scottish Broadcasting Commission, also found
that there is a practice of labelling some programming as "Scottish
productions" when there is "very little financial or creative connection to
Scotland".
The SBC found that a number of drama and factual series had allegedly been
described as Scottish commissions, when in fact they had "very minimal
creative or financial connection" with the country.
ITV "made it clear" in evidence to the commission that "they did not regard
themselves as obliged to source network programmes from Scotland at all".
The report found that a common theme from the main broadcasters was that
commercial pressures had led to a "risk-averse culture" in the commissioning
process for network productions.
Scottish producers were also criticised by the SBC for their poor
performance on securing returning series commissions.
Other problems highlighted by the report included the distance of the
Scottish TV production industry from the main TV commissioning centre in
London and a "lack of engagement with the Scottish sector by London-based
commissioning editors".
The report said that it was "disappointing" that, to date, there has not
been a policy commitment from Channel 4 relating to commissioning from
Scotland.

Stand-in Takes To
The Ice
The newest star to take the rink in ITV's Dancing on Ice has
been revealed as Coronation Street's Zaraah Abrahams.
The 20-year-old is replacing GMTV's Michael Underwood after he was forced to
pull out of the competition when he broke his ankle.
Best known for her role in the soap as factory girl Joanna Jackson she has
been practising since November as a stand-in.
She will be partnered by Fred Palascak who originally danced with presenter
Sarah Greene before she was voted off the show.
Abrahams said she would rather not have joined the show as a result of an
injury: "I always said I'd only ever want to go in if someone couldn't take
the pressure of the competition, not if someone hurt themselves.
"I really loved watching Michael and ironically he is the only one of the
contestants I knew already, so I couldn't believe it when I heard I would be
replacing him.
"It would have been great to see him continue. I feel great that I'm in the
show but I definitely wish he was too."
She said she had been practising but admitted the other contestants would
have the edge when it comes to confidence on the ice.
