BBC Comedy Series On Hold

The spring series of Radio 4 comedy show I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue has been postponed after presenter Humphrey Lyttelton was admitted to hospital.

Lyttelton, 86, who has hosted the "self-styled antidote to panel games" since 1972, is undergoing an operation to repair an aortic aneurysm.

The show's producer, Jon Naismith, emailed fans on the programme's mailing list to say the veteran musician was "otherwise fine and in good spirits".

Naismith wrote to fans: "I was expecting to announce the venues and dates of recordings in the spring series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, but unfortunately I've had to put these plans on hold as Humphrey Lyttelton has been detained in hospital for an operation to repair an aortic aneurysm.

"We are unclear precisely how long Humph's recovery period will be, but it seems very likely that the spring series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue will have to be postponed. Humph is otherwise fine and in very good spirits."

The Gethin Jones Show

Gethin Jones, the departing Blue Peter presenter, is joining BBC Radio 5 Live in July.

The Gethin Jones Show starts on Saturday July 5, running for two months.

Jones leaves Blue Peter at the end of the current series in June.

Initially the broadcast time of his 5 Live show will be 09:00 to noon.

This will then alter slightly in August to fit around 5 Live's coverage of the Beijing Olympics.

Adrian Van Klaveren, the new Controller of Radio 5 Live, said: "I'm really excited that Gethin is joining the 5 Live team.

"He'll be a fresh new voice to capture the spirit of summer and his show will fit in perfectly with the rest of our special programmes during July and August."

Gethin Jones said: "Joining Radio 5 Live with my own show is fantastic and I can't wait to get started. I relish a challenge and my first venture into radio will be just that.

"I've always loved the station and look forward to bringing my own flavour to Saturday mornings."

Jones said: "We never intended to write a second series let alone a third.

"We don't want it to become predictable. We will see how the Christmas special goes and take it from there."

Corden added: "We will write one if we can make it better. We have to be true to ourselves."

Derren Brown Is Gay

Illusionist and magician Derren Brown has told The Sun he is gay.

The 37-year-old said he is in a “perfect” relationship with a man but apologised to his admiring female fans.

He said: “I’ve been with my partner for a year – and it’s perfect.

“Coming out when you are in the public eye is one of those things that isn’t an issue to yourself, your friends or your family. But you have to make a statement about it.

“You have to be open and up front – or you end up turning it into a dark secret in your mind.”

I really needed to know this. Will you please let us know when you next find out a famous person is heterosexual?

I understand where you're coming from, but the fact is that this is still news that deserves to be reported. Until we reach a point where sexuality is as irrelevant to everyone as whether someone is left- or right-handed, we need public figures to come out and be open and honest about their sexuality.

It's about having positive role models for people who are struggling with their own sexuality, and at a time when homophobic bullying in schools is at an all-time high and rising, we still clearly have a long way to go.

Howard Dropped From Halifax Commercials

It could be the end to some of the UK's most annoying television commercials as bespectacled Howard Brown is dropped from the Halifax advertisements.

A former branch customer service advisor, Brown, 42, has been fronting Halifax’s commercials since 2000.

But now the bank is looking for fresh ideas after reviewing their £18 million advertising account.

He has starred in or played a cameo role in eight commercials, sometimes in cartoon form.

He even made a guest appearance in a Christmas special of the BBC comedy The Office and a waxworks model of him went on exhibition at Madame Tussauds in London.

A bank spokesman said: “As part of its standard business practice, Halifax is launching a review of its retail advertising.

“This will focus on the development of a new campaign to build on the very successful ‘Staff as Stars’ campaign.”

Philip Hanson, director of marketing for HBOS, which owns the Halifax, said: “It is only right that we periodically review our advertising. It is the right time for us to do this as we develop our campaign.”

Howard Brown will still be employed by the Halifax in a public relations role.

Britney Spears To Return To Sitcom

Britney Spears is to return to the TV sitcom which gave her a career boost last month.

The troubled singer gave show How I Met Your Mother its highest ratings ever when she appeared as a love-struck secretary in an episode on March 24, and now she had agreed to reprise her character, according to reports.

A source said: "The show is ecstatic and so is Britney. She had so much fun the first time around she really wanted to come back. It was a mutual decision to work together more."

The one-episode deal comes just days after Spears' former manager Larry Rudolph admitted the singer loved appearing on the show and talked constantly about it during recent meetings with him.

He said, "It was a really positive experience for her. She talked about it quite a bit the last time I saw her... She wants to do it again."

Earlier this month, show executive producer Carter Bays admitted he would  be delighted to have Spears back on the show: "I thought she was great. I was very proud of that episode."
