Commercials - Turn Down The Volume

New guidelines are set to be introduced banning commercials deemed to be too loud.

The guidelines on sound levels will be introduced into the TV advertising code on July 7, stating that "advertisements must not be excessively noisy or strident".

The move to tighten rules relating to the sounds levels in TV commercials comes after the Advertising Standards Authority received more than 100 complaints in 2007 from viewers complaining that some commercials were too loud.

"Often the problem arises because the audio files used in the ads have been compressed, making quieter sounds more pronounced or 'punchy'," said the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice, the body responsible for writing the TV ad code.

"The result is that ads can sound subjectively louder than the programmes around which they appear."

To guard against this the new BCAP guidelines will state, specifically, that the "maximum subjective loudness of advertisements must be consistent and in line with the maximum loudness of programmes and junction material".

The body has held a full public consultation on the issue with the aim for the new rules to "provide more certainty for broadcasters" and minimise the annoyance "that can be caused to viewers".

"BCAP were acutely aware of the frustration that excessively loud or seemingly noisy ads were causing consumers," said a spokesman for the Committee for Advertising Practice.

"The consultation has taken account of their concerns and will ensure a level playing field across all ads in the same commercial break. This should help prevent consumers having to turn down the volume during ad breaks."

Beijing Olympics In HD On Freesat

Viewers will be able to watch up to 300 hours of HD Beijing Olympic coverage on Freesat this summer.

Speaking today at the launch of the free-to-air satellite service, BBC chairman Mark Thompson said: "We will show the Beijing Olympics in HD without subscription. It feels like the right time for the launch."

Thompson said that within a year services like the BBC's iPlayer and Kangeroo will be available through the Freesat set-top boxes Ethernet port.

The service will initially include two HD channels - BBC HD and ITV HD. The latter will be exclusive to Freesat and unavailable on Sky because they are encrypted through the Freesat set-top boxes interactive sortware.

ITV executive chairman Michael Grade said: "We won't give it to Sky for nothing."

James Whale Fired

Waveguide - James WhaleControversial radio presenter James Whale has been from TalkSport, after he breached broadcasting rules regarding impartiality.

A number fo complaints were received by Ofcom after he made comments during a show on March 20, in which he urged listeners to vote for Boris Johnson to be London's new mayor.

A statement issued by TalkSport said: "TalkSport presenter James Whale's contract with the radio station has been terminated after a breach of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code regarding due impartiality.

"It's very unfortunate. We have investigated the matter and after serious consideration, the station reached the decision that there was a clear breach of the rules and that we had no choice but to terminate his contract.

"James Whale is guilty of a gross error of judgment which we found to be totally unacceptable.

"Talksport has acknowledged the seriousness of the complaints received, does not excuse the content of the broadcast and has told Ofcom that it has taken steps to prevent this happening again.

"The matter is still under investigation by Ofcom so it would be inappropriate to comment any further on the details of the complaints."

No, don't bring him back. The rules on impartiality are there for a reason, not just for people to flount them if they feel like it. He flagrantly broke the rules and he rightly got sacked for it.

X Factor - Glasgow Auditions

An estimated 10,000 hopefuls queued in the sunshine at Glasgow's Hampden Park yesterday hoping to be crowned the next X Factor champion.

The singers are all hoping to follow in the footsteps of last year's winner, Leon Jackson.

The singer, from Whitburn, West Lothian, won a £1million contract with Simon Cowell's management company and Sony BMG. He went on to have last year's Christmas No1, When You Believe.

An X Factor spokeswoman said: "Last year's winner, Leon, auditioned at Glasgow and we're hoping to find more Scottish talent this year."

Successful singers have been called back and will perform again today for the judges.

Hi I just wanted to say I am am sure a lot of ppl from Northern Ireland are so annoyed that the xfactor production team no longer come to Belfast for auditions, after all we are supposed to be part of Great Britain, & we have as much talent in this city as Glasgow, London, Birmingham & Cardiff..

I flew over as did a lot of people from N.I. to Glasgow as it was the nearest audition to Belfast, ppl form here went to a lot of expense to get there, in total I spent £1,100 on flights, hotel, taxi's, clothes for the audition, hair & make up..

I took my 14 yr old daughter, I am not pi**d of cause she never got through to the next stage & meet the judges, I'm so angry the way the audition was held, it was so hot, there was no water being handed out for the long queue, the xfactor team spent more time making everyone do things to make their programme more interesting than actually on the auditions, then the whole thing
was just a total waste of time, in the letter it told us to rehearse, look good etc, don't no why they wanted ppl looking gd as the production team that judged everyone didn't even ask my daughter & other ppl her age, anything about themselves, or comment on her clothes, autditon or give advice, & while it was the same for most ppl, the ppl that entered from N.I. had paid a lot for nothing.

We also noticed they said kids from 14 to 16 would be seen 1st, another lie, & the booths they auditioned in hardly put any1 threw to next stage..all the gold ticket ppl seem to come out of the first few booths but don't think snyone got a gold ticket, my daughter had got the flu on sunday & still went for it, thewhole programme is a waste of time, so we goin to take anyway it's onwards & upwards my daughter has achieved so much, everyone says she has an amazing voice.. but we won't enter xfactor next yr.
