Virgin Radio Sold

Virgin Radio has been sold by SMG to TIML Golden Square Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Times of India Group, for £53.2m.

The new station will be managed by Absolute Radio, owners of JACK fm and FM107.9 in Oxford, and a team comprising media and entertainment specialists from TIML.

Rob Woodward Chief Executive of SMG plc said: “I believe that £53.2 million represents a sound price for Virgin Radio and a good deal for SMG shareholders. The disposal of Virgin Radio is consistent with our overall strategy and the proceeds of the sale will allow us to return cash to shareholders, as well as further strengthen an already healthy balance sheet.

"I would like to wish the management team and all the employees of Virgin Radio the best of luck for the future and I am sure that the business will continue to prosper under TIML’s ownership.”

Kidnap Victim To Host TV Show

For years TV was her main entertainment and view of the world as she lived in an underground prison. Now the kidnap victim Natascha Kampusch is to become a TV talk show host herself - a career she dreamed of during her 8½-year ordeal.

This weekend the 20-year old Austrian will host the first in her chat show series, Natascha Kampusch Meets … on the private channel Puls 4.

In her own words the 50-minute show is about finding out "how people get to where they are". She said: "I'm interested in people who deal with the everyday in a courageous and confident way, and in the process often manage to achieve extraordinary things."

Her first interview is with Niki Lauda, the former formula one racing driver who almost died in a crash at the 1976 German grand prix. Lauda said he was initially sceptical about being interviewed by the former kidnap victim, who was released less than two years ago.

"I met up with her before agreeing to do the interview," he said. "I wanted to find out why she wanted to do it at all. She told me it was what she's interested in pursuing." He said the interview had been insightful. "She asked me questions that I have never been asked before … she got a lot out of me with her manner of talking."

The recorded programme will  be broadcast once a month allowing Kampusch time to continue study for her school exams.

George Galloway Bill Complaint

Lawyers for Respect MP George Galloway have complained to TalkBack Thames over a storyline in The Bill that he claims was based on him.

Galloway said he was libelled in an episode shown last November which showed a character called Paul Sagger MP who had smuggled drugs back from Iraq and looted an antique dagger from a Baghdad museum.

The character is injured during a shooting that kills a Muslim cleric at a Rock Against Racism gig, an event held in Galloway's own east London constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow.

Neither TalkBack Thames nor George Galloway's parliamentary office would comment on the case, but both confirmed that a letter of complaint had been sent by Galloway's lawyers to the legal department of Talkback Thames.

Jonathan Creek Set To Return

After almost five years away from the screens, BBC One is planning to bring back detective comedy-drama Jonathan Creek after almost five years for a Christmas special.

Pre-production has begun on a one-off 90-minute edition of the show, with Alan Davies returning to the title role as a designer of magic tricks who solves mysterious crimes.

Creator David Renwick, who penned all 25 episodes of the show in its original run from 1997 to early 2004, is writing a script with the expectation of filming in the summer.

"After a five year break I think we're all looking forward to getting Creek back on the screen, and the BBC appear to be quite excited, so fingers crossed," he said.

Live Commercial A Success

Channel 4 last night staged a live television commercial involving an ambitious skydiving jump.

The commercial, screened during the channel's dinner party series Come Dine With Me, saw 14 daredevils jump out of a plane before forming the letters H-O-N-D-A.

With only three minutes and 20 seconds to spell out the message the skydivers appeared to struggle over the letter "N", but it all came together in the end.

As they approached the ground in Madrid, one member even had time to deliver his own personal message, with his gloves coming together to form the words "HELLO MUM".

The advert, inspired by Honda's strapline, "If it's difficult it's worth doing", is a precursor to the car manufacturer's new advertising campaign, beginning on June 1.

The idea was developed by Channel 4's strategic sales team, led by Mike Parker, and 4creative for Honda.

Parker said: "Honda is walking the talk with this ad launch; it is bold, daring and very difficult."

The team of expert skydivers includes European champion Phil Curtis, four world champions and nine national skydiving champions.

Andy Barnes, sales director, Channel 4, said: "This concept breaks the boundaries of the perceived confines of TV advertising, which is something Channel 4 is striving to do."

The Real Father Ted

On Monday, June 16, BBC Four tells the story of the man said to be the real Father Ted.

Father Michael Cleary was one of the superstars of the Irish Catholic Church. A multi-talented clergyman, who recorded two No. 1 singles, topped the bill at the Sydney Opera House and had his own TV and radio chat shows, he was one of the most popular figures in Ireland.

Young film-maker Alison Millar was delighted when he agreed to let her follow him for a year as her graduation film, and she grew close to Fr Michael, his housekeeper, Phyllis, and her son, Ross.

Soon after Alison finished filming, Fr Michael died, and the world discovered that Phyllis and Ross were, in fact, his lover and son. Millar's footage was suddenly in high demand, but she put it in her parent's attic and let it lie.

Fifteen years later, in this film for the Storyville strand, Millar revisits her archive and tells the story of her year with the superstar priest who inspired TV's Father Ted.
