Jill Dando Retrial - Jurors

Selection for potential jurors in the Jill Dando murder retrial has begun.

But attempts to find 20 men and women able to serve were not successful at the Old Bailey where Barry George faces a second trial.

Only 16 people were selected from a panel of 50. New jurors will be added on Wednesday before 12 are chosen and sent away until next week.

The case is due to be opened on Monday and a site visit will take place on Tuesday.

George, 48, of Fulham, west London, denies shooting the BBC television presenter dead in April 1999.

The 37-year-old Crimewatch presenter died on her doorstep in Gowan Avenue, Fulham, from a bullet wound to the head.

George stood in the dock in a blue sweatshirt and jeans. He answered in a whisper when asked to confirm his name.

Jurors were excused if they knew Miss Dando and her fiance, doctor Alan Farthing, if they were police officers or worked for the Metropolitan Police or the BBC and if they lived in Fulham during the last 30 years.

They were also excused for personal reasons or if they had holidays or hospital appointments.

The trial is due to last between six to eight weeks.

Lloyd Webber Stays With The BBC

Andrew Lloyd Webber is to stay with the BBC for his next television project, it was confirmed today.

His latest show, I'd Do Anything, looking for a new Nancy and Oliver for the forthcoming Cameron Mackintosh production of Oliver!, came to an end on Saturday night.

Lloyd Webber had lunch on Thursday with new BBC One controller Jay Hunt together with BBC controller of entertainment commissioning Elaine Bedell.

Speculation that the next talent show could be a search for Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz was denied by a source close to Lloyd Webber, although Lloyd Webber's company, the Really Useful Group, recently acquired the rights and is in discussions about staging the musical.

Bedell has previously said she thought the Wizard of Oz would be too American for British tastes. She has also flagged the idea of doing a search for a new Eliza Doolittle for My Fair Lady.

A BBC Spokesman said: "They discussed a number of ideas but nothing has been agreed at this stage," he said.

Simpsons Cast Sign Pay Deal

The cast of The Simpson have signed a four-year deal that guarantees a 20th season of the cartoon show, according to reports from the US.

Production was delayed for several months while the voice actors and 20th Century Fox TV discussed an agreement.

Reports indicate the salaries of the stars - including Dan Castellaneta (Homer) and Nancy Cartwright (Bart) - would rise to $400,000 (£200,000) an episode.

The Simpsons is the US' longest-running prime-time entertainment series.

Because of the delay, 20 episodes of the new series will be made instead of the usual 22.

This annoys me so much....how much skill is there in providing a funny
voice? Enough to make you a multi-millionaire? I think not. I wish the producers had the guts to find voice-a-likes!!!

Kevin Greening Verdict

An inquest has heard today that Smooth FM presenter Kevin Greening died from a drugs overdose after taking part in a bondage sex session.

The body of the 44-year-old was found by police in a flat in Wandsworth, south London, in December last year, Westminster Coroner's Court heard.

Coroner Paul Knapman recorded a verdict of misadventure.

Mr Knapman said: "He was found dead having indulged in unorthodox sexual behaviour involving restraint equipment and illegal drugs."

On the day he died, he had been in a leather sling attached to scaffolding in the bedroom of the flat occupied by his boyfriend Sean Griffin, the inquest heard.

At the time, the inquest heard, Mr Greening was still wearing a rubber suit and had cling film and "gaffer tape" around him.

Recording his verdict, Mr Knapman said Mr Greening died from a "mixed drugs toxicity" or overdose and not from being held "in a form of bondage".

Sean Griffin told the inquest he had become concerned about Mr Greening when he noticed that his face was pale and the area around his mouth was grey.

Griffin had initially been arrested on suspicion of murder but was later released without charge when the circumstances of Mr Greening's death had become clear.

Asked by Dr Knapman to confirm that at all times their activity had been "perfectly consensual" between the two men in the privacy of the flat, Griffin replied: "Indeed."

"Kevin and I had a very happy and very vigorous sex life," he said.

"It was not conventional by heterosexual norms perhaps but it was a sex life which was vigorous and imaginative and we enjoyed each other."

The inquest heard that tests on Mr Greening's blood after his death found traces of cocaine and ecstasy.

Kevin Greening Inquest Resumes

The inquest into the death of Smooth Radio presenter Kevin Greening is to resume in London.

Greening, 44, was found dead by police at a flat in Wandsworth on December 29, the eve of his 45th birthday.

Greening's agent, Chris North, announced his death by telling the BBC he had died peacefully in his sleep.

An initial post mortem proved inconclusive, but further toxicology tests revealed that the DJ died from "drug toxicity" - an overdose.

A 51-year-old man arrested at the time of Greening's death was later cautioned for drug possession.

The police have said that no-one will be prosecuted over the death.

The inquest will be held at Westminster Coroners Court in central London.

Jill Dando Murder Retrial

Barry George is returning to the Old Bailey for the start of his retrial for murdering BBC television presenter Jill Dando.

George, 47, of Fulham, west London, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Dando, who was shot outside her Fulham home in April 1999.

It will be George's second trial for the murder. He was found guilty at the first trial in 2001 and has been in prison since he started to serve his life sentence.

But the Court of Appeal quashed the conviction and ordered a retrial in November last year following a defence challenge to the forensic evidence.

George lived half a mile from the 37-year-old Crimewatch and Holiday presenter.

A jury panel is due to be selected but most of the week will be taken up with legal matters before the case is opened.

Ms Dando was born in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and first worked as a journalist on her local paper before joining the BBC.

After moving to London in 1988 she built up a huge following as a newsreader and presenter, becoming one of the best-loved faces on British television.

From 1995 Ms Dando teamed up with Nick Ross to front the BBC's monthly Crimewatch programme.

Three months before her murder on April 26 1999 she had become engaged to gynaecologist Alan Farthing, whom she met on a blind date.
