BBC One Live On
The Internet
BBC One is to be broadcast live on the internet, making it
the first first time in the flagship channel's 44-year history,
viewers will not need a television to watch it.
The channel will be available as a live video stream via bbc.co.uk, which is
being relaunched with improved listings and programme information.
Although BBC Three and the BBC News Channel are already simulcast online,
they have always been digital services, whereas BBC One is the first of the
corporation's mainstream analogue networks to take the internet plunge.
Despite the move meaning viewers will not need a television to access BBC
One, they will still have to pay the licence fee.
The plan was outlined today in the BBC's annual statements of programme
policy and is due to be carried out within the next year.
The BBC director general, Mark Thompson, said: "Building on the success of
the iPlayer, we want to develop bbc.co.uk to include a broad range of the
BBC's broadcast content, as well as new and interactive forms of media that
enable audiences to interact with and contribute to the website."

New Drama For BBC Two
Bradley Whitford heads the cast in Burn Up, two-part thriller
for BBC Two written by Simon Beaufoy.
Due to be broadcast in July, it is produced by Kudos Film and Television.
The topical thriller sees oil executives, environmental activists and
politicians collide in the battle between economic success and ecological
responsibility.
BBC Commissioning Editor for Drama, Lucy Richer, said: "Burn Up is a highly
authored piece wholly of this unique moment in time. The exciting mix of US,
Canadian and UK talent, the awesome backdrop of the Canadian wilds combined
with Simon's taut and provocative script makes for an epic proposition."
Kudos Film and Television's Stephen Garrett said: "As a lifelong fan of the
political thriller, it's been incredibly satisfying to marry it to the most
urgent issue facing us as the century unfolds – a potent cocktail of fiction
and fact that we hope will enlighten as much as it will entertain."

Now It's Sir
Michael Parky
Michael Parkinson has been knighted by the Queen at
Buckingham Palace.
The former chat show host, journalist and radio presenter,
whose career spanned more than 40 years, received the honour for services to
broadcasting.
Sir Michael described the honour as "a wonderful surprise".
"I never expected to be knighted I thought there was more chance of me
turning into a Martian really," he said when the award was announced.
Parkinson began on the BBC in 1971 and ran for 11 years. It made a comeback
in 1998, but in 2004 Sir Michael announced he was moving to ITV after the
corporation tried to move his show to make way for Match Of The Day.
TV doctor Christopher Steele also picked up his MBE in recognition of his
services to general medical practice and broadcasting.
Dr Steele is the resident doctor on This Morning and has been on the show
since 1987. He qualified in 1968 and since then has worked as a GP in south

Big Fine For MTV
Europe
MTV Networks Europe has been fined £255,000 by Ofcom for
repeatedly broadcasting "highly offensive" language and material before
21:00.
The media regulator found MTV guilty of "widespread and persistent breaches"
of the broadcasting code across its TMF, MTV France, MTV UK and MTV Hits
channels.
TMF aired a trailer for Totally Jodie Marsh seven times during the morning
and early afternoon, even though it contained the sentence "I just don't
want you settling down with some f**king w**ker from a modelling agency".
One film review show, aired on MTV UK at 21:00, featured strong language
from the 15-rated film Superbad.
MTV France drew complaints after it broadcast racist and homophobic French
text messages in the early hours of Christmas even 2006, which translated
as: "the white race will triumph", "death to all immigrants", "death to
gays" and "immigrants are going to f**k your mother".
Ofcom said: "This material concluded that this material was not justified by
the context of broadcasts that were likely to appeal to children and that
the likely audience would have expected to have been protected from the most
offensive language and material in such programming."
The broadcaster also fell foul of Ofcom's rules that require a broadcaster
to provide recordings.
An MTV Networks European spokesman said: "We take this sanction and fine
very seriously and has taken a series of steps to minimise as much as
possible any breaches in the future. These include strengthening procedures
regarding programmes for pre-watershed broadcast, reviewing MTV's archive
programming, increasing the number of staff involved in compliance and
investing in a new channel management system."
