S4C To Provide English Sports Commentary

S4C announced today it is to provide English commentary on its domestic football and rugby coverage via a red-button interactive option to supplement its main Welsh language coverage.

The new service will be available via the red button on S4C Digidol on Sky, Freeview, Freesat and Virgin TV in Wales, and outside Wales on Sky and Freesat.

S4C's main commentary on its football and rugby coverage will continue to be in Welsh. The broadcaster already provides English subtitles on its service.

The new service will mean that English language commentary will be available for The Welsh Premier football league and the Welsh Cup as well as highlights of Wales home international matches.

English commentary will also be available for all live rugby games in the Magners League, Swalec Cup and live games from the Principality Premiership.

The new English-language service will be financed from S4C's commercial fund, not from the public fund which pays for Welsh language content.

Iona Jones, the S4C chief executive, said, "S4C is a Welsh-language broadcaster with a remit to provide high quality programmes in the Welsh language.

"However, the new service will enhance the appeal and accessibility of S4C to the many non-Welsh speakers who watch the channel, particularly our extensive sports output."

Funeral For Emmerdale Actor

Cast members from Yorkshire soap Emmerdale have joined the family of star Clive Hornby at his funeral in Leeds.

The actor, who had played cloth-capped farmer Jack Sugden in the ITV1 soap since 1980, died earlier this month at the age of 63.

Elizabeth Estensen, who plays his on-screen wife Diane, read a eulogy at the service at Rawdon Crematorium.

Also present to pay his respects was Kelvin Fletcher, who plays Hornby's on-screen son Andy Sugden.

Former stars of the ITV1 soap, including Claire King and Malandra Burrows, were also in attendance.

Hornby's son Tom also paid an emotional tribute at the service, recalling the times he spent with his father.

He told mourners: "He was my best friend, whom I trusted and respect."

Ms Estensen told the congregation of the bravery with which the actor faced his illness.

She described how he endured great pain but told only a small number of people he was not well while he was still working.

"The thought of Tom kept him going," she said.

Hornby's last scenes were shown in February but the actor, who began his career as a musician, had been determined to beat a mystery illness and return to work.

Prison Break Spin-off

More details have emerged about the Prison Break spin-off series, which will be set in a women's prison.

According to the show's executive producer Matt Olmstead and co-executive producer Zack Estrin plan have been scrapped to introduce a new female character in Prison Break who would then become the star of the spin-off series.

Instead, they are planning a completely new series as part of the Prison Break brand.

Estrin said: "This is more like a CSI: NY - more of a brand spin-off than a character spin-off."

The working title for the show is Cherry Hill, but that could change to Prison Break: Cherry Hill.

Could Big Brother End?

The odds on Channel 4's Big Brother being axed have shortened to 8-1 following the cancellation of the Australia version.

Network Ten is pulling the plug on the current series which ends on July 21.

The UK's version, the ninth season of Big Brother, has seen viewing figures averaging 3.3m, 5 per cent down from the 3.6m this time last year.

Big Brother originated in the Netherlands in 1999. The UK version launched on Channel 4 a year later. Two years ago the channel made a new deal to take it up to 2010.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg explained the reason for changing the odds on Big Brother being axed from 16-1 to 8-1.

He said: "Big Brother's fall from grace Down Under demonstrates that everything has a shelf life. It suggests that the format is getting a bit tired."

Reader Comment

I hope BB comes to an end. The idea had run out of steam by about the end of series 3. It's just full of wannabes, idiots and deliberately chosen unusual people to wind each other up, rather than much of a cross section...
