Liz McClarnon
Is Celeb Masterchef
Former Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon has been crowned Celebrity
MasterChef 2008.
McClarnon, who could not cook before the competition, was transformed into a
"fantastic cook", according to judges.
The title for the BBC One competition was awarded by chef and restaurateur
John Torode and food writer and ingredients expert Gregg Wallace.
McClarnon said: "I can't believe it. I'm so proud, all that hard work has
finally paid off. I'm so glad I won. It was such a tough journey for someone
who couldn't cook.
"The only down side is that I had to cook my own birthday meal because I was
the best cook in the house."
The programme saw McClarnon compete in a first round heat, quarter final and
intense final week of rounds when she saw off competition from presenter
Andi Peters and actor Mark Moraghan.
Wallace said: "Liz is by the far the best natural cook that I've seen in a
long, long time.
"She has really shown a triumph of spirit and has shown what can be done if
you link natural talent to real want. Liz was not a great cook when she
started MasterChef but she was by the end of it - she is a fantastic cook."
Throughout the final week McClarnon's cooking abilities were tested to the
limit as the finalists were asked to cook for 600 builders, army cadets in
the field, and for Michelin starred chefs including Michel Roux Jr.
Torode said: "Liz has exactly what it takes. She has the skill, the passion,
the drive, the determination but above all the love, the attention to detail
that makes a natural cook."

Carol Vorderman
Quits Countdown
Presenter Carol Vorderman, 47, has announced she is to step
down from presenting the Channel 4 television game show Countdown.
She started work on the quiz show when it began in 1982, alongside host
Richard Whiteley.
Vorderman's announcement comes after O'Connor said on Wednesday that he is
also quitting the programme.
The network's director of television Kevin Lygo said he was "extremely sorry
to see Carol leave.
"She was the first woman on Channel 4 and has made an enormous contribution
to the success of Countdown over the last 25 years," he said.
"We hope to work with her again on other projects."
In a statement, Vorderman's manager John Miles said she considered quitting
the show when Whiteley died but eventually agreed to continue.
He said: "Countdown has been such a huge part of her life for so long.
"Carol wants to thank all of the crew, the thousands of contestants who have
played the game and the millions of Countdown viewers for whom she has the
greatest respect.
"She is extremely sad."

LBC News 1152 Drops Overnight Rolling News
LBC News 1152 will axe its overnight rolling news service and
will instead simulcast sister station LBC 97.3, starting on August 1.
The news on the AM service will be replaced by content from
the FM service between 19:00 and 07:00 weekdays, and from 18:00 on Saturdays
and 19:00 on Sundays.
LBC programme director Jonathan Richards said that because of
the high cost of the service together with its low revenue potential it was
no longer possible to sustain the 24-hour rolling news format.

Reader Comment
I think this is a great idea. Many people still listen to
AM and the FM signal is badly affected by pirates at night. It's a shame
they can't launch another service on the 1152 DAB carrier to fill the
nightshift.

Ironic considering that one of the major reason that the
original LBC lost its license was because it simulcast overnights!

BBC Trustees Expenses
The BBC trustees claimed an average of £12,281 in expenses
per person in the year ended March 31, including £890.43 for the purchase of
a television by trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons.
The expenses bill for Sir Michael Lyons was £26,167.44, which including the
bill for the television and £178.09 for a DVD player.
However, any audiovisual equipment is "on loan" to trustees and must be
returned or bought when they leave the trust.
Trustees were also able to claim the cost of a Sky satellite subscription,
capped at £25 a month, the approximate cost of a basic high-definition
subscription.
A BBC statement said: "Trust members are offered home use of audiovisual
equipment to enable them to experience the full range of television and
digital radio channels available (including satellite subscriptions) in
support of their responsibility supervising the BBC's services and their
operation within the wider media market."
The total expenses bill was £147,373.34 between 12 trustees, with the
biggest costs accommodation at £51,050.31 and cars at £38,982.76. Flights
and rail are roughly even at £23,204.06 and £23,522.62 respectively.
The most expensive trustee was Jeremy Peat, the trust member for Scotland,
who claimed £9,810.85 in flights and £12,623.09 in accommodation.
The trust member for Northern Ireland, Rotha Johnston, also claimed
£7,323.76 in flights but because she had relatively modest expenses in other
areas, her total claim for the year was considerably lower at £13,038.15.
Lyons travelled primarily by rail and car rather than flying.
The cheapest trustees were David Liddiment, with £1,229.29 worth of expenses
and Mehmuda Mian Pritchard with £1,481.54.

Countdown - Carol
Vorderman
Following on from the news that Des O'Connor is to quit in
November as the host of Channel 4's Countdown, the future of Carol
Vorderman's involvement in the show is in doubt.
Vorderman has been co-host of the show since it started in
November 1982 and turns over the letters on the programme, as well as adding
up the numbers at the conclusion of each round.
But production company Granada, which owns Countdown producers Yorkshire, is
cutting costs on the show and it is understood that they want to make
cutbacks on the amount they pay talent.
Meanwhile, Rory Bremner is reported to be the leading
contender to take over hosting the show when O'Connor leaves.
The impressionist, along with Aled Jones, Gyles Brandreth and Michael Aspel,
are understood to be among those in the running.
"We will be announcing a replacement for Des O'Connor in due course, we are
currently in negotiations with Carol," a Channel 4 spokeswoman said.

New Drugs Charges For Former BBC Journalist
Three new drug charges laid against former BBC journalist
Peter Lloyd in Singapore include one count of possessing utensils that
carried traces of the veterinary drug ketamine.
Nicknamed Special K, ketamine is also a recreational drug used for its
psychedelic or hallucinogenic effects.
The other two new charges against Lloyd are methamphetamine consumption
without authorisation, and possessing utensils that carried traces of
methamphetamine, a charge sheet shows.
The consumption charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail or a
$S20,000 (£8,000) fine, or both.
The other two charges each have a maximum penalty of three years in jail or
a $S10,000 (£3,500) fine or both.
The three new charges relate to events on July 16, the day of the
correspondent's arrest while on leave in Singapore.
Lloyd, who is now South East Asia correspondent for Australia's ABC, was
grim-faced as he appeared today before the Singapore Subordinates Court on
charges of possessing and trafficking the drug ice.
During a brief hearing the court heard that the three additional charges had
been laid against Lloyd, who was already facing allegations which could land
him in jail for up to 20 years, or earn him up to 15 strokes of the cane.
Amendments have also been made to the two original charges laid against
Lloyd of possessing and trafficking methamphetamine, or ice.
It is alleged that on July 9 at Singapore's York Hotel, he sold a packet
containing 0.15 grams of methamphetamine to a person identified as Sani bin
Saidi.
The New Delhi-based foreign correspondent was released on bail on Wednesday
after being arrested last week while on leave in Singapore.
He was also charged with allegedly being in possession of about one gram of
ice.

ITV Canoe Man
Documentary
Next week ITV is to screen the hour-long documentary One Man
And His Canoe: The John Darwin Story.
For six years John Darwin pretended he was dead – faking his
own drowning in a canoeing accident. With his wife Anne at his side, he
lived out a fantasy, changing his name, altering his appearance, and hiding
from the debt-ridden world he left behind.
When he walked into a police station in December 2007, uttering the words "I
think you’ve been looking for me" John Darwin’s story was reported as a
miraculous return for a loving husband and father. But days later, when a
picture surfaced of John and Anne together in Panama after his supposed
‘death,’ Darwin’s lies started to unravel.
The documentary is produced by True North, the only production company with
exclusive access to the police investigation that pieced together the story
of John’s double life and his wife Anne’s part in the deception.
Facing mounting evidence that John’s disappearance was a
hoax, the film sees John admit to plotting his own death, picking the right
weather conditions, and canoeing out of sight, before sneaking back to the
shore to begin his new existence.
The film follows their lies across the world – from North East England to
Panama – via Kansas and Gibraltar; and reveals the lengths they would go to,
to evade justice.
