Nigel
Lythgoe Left To Get A Life
Nigel Lythgoe told reporters in Hollywood that his recent
announcement that he is leaving his role of executive producer of American
Idol was to "get myself a life".
"Because (working on the show) is 24/7 and then some, you know," he said.
"So you just need to get away from it. I've done it for seven seasons now."
Lythgoe said he would be focusing on his hit US talent programme So You
Think You Can Dance, hosted by Cat Deeley and on which he serves as a judge.
However, he admitted he is keen on developing new projects.
"I want something new to go forward with," he said. "And I've got lots of
ideas that I want to develop to be honest. But it's a waiting game. I've got
to sell them and then I've got to develop them."

BBC Three
Parents teaching their children to drive come under the
spotlight in a pilot for BBC Three to be broadcast next month.
The programme follows Verity Abrahams and Joe Pritchard, both
17, over three weeks of intensive training from their parents with whom they
have rocky relationships. If they pass their driving tests at the end of the
three weeks, they will each receive a fully insured and taxed car of their
own.
Pritchard is the gay hairdresser son of a tattooed biker, and the pair only
ever spend time together when they are watching television. Meanwhile
Abrahams is the daughter of divorced parents whose contradictory driving
instructions send her crashing into a hedge and another car.

New Gardeners'
World Presenter
Toby Buckland has been named as the new main presenter for
BBC Two's Gardeners' World, after Monty Don stood down earlier this year due
to ill health.
Buckland trained and worked as a rose and pinks nurseryman and gardener
before qualifying in landscape management at Greenwich University.
He is known for his inspiring, hands-on approach, and for his artistic
garden features made from plants and recycled materials.
Buckland has presented and guest presented for many gardening shows,
including Gardeners' World Live, Home Front In The Garden, and Real Wrecks
for the BBC, and RHS Garden Challenge and Weed It & Reap for UKTV Style.
Nick Shearman, Commissioning Editor, In-House, BBC Knowledge, said: "It's
brilliant news that Toby is joining the Gardeners' World team.
"He is hugely likeable and enthusiastic and brings to the team his love of
recycling and ethical gardening."
"He is an excellent horticulturalist who will bring fresh energy to
Gardeners' World, and with the rest of the team will potentially bring new
viewers to what is already a fantastic BBC show."
Toby Buckland will join Gardeners' World regulars Carol Klein
and Joe Swift on September 12 when the main series returns to BBC Two

ITN
Journalist Roughed Up In China
Reports are emerging that Chinese police dragged ITN
journalist John Ray along the ground and detained him today after he tried
to report on a pro-Tibet protest near the main Olympic stadium.
Uniformed police pounced on Ray, China correspondent for ITN,
and wrestled him to the ground shortly after foreign protesters unfurled a
pro-Tibet banner, witnesses and the reporter said.
Up to seven protesters were arrested within seconds, while Ray was dragged
into a nearby restaurant and forcibly held down by officers who also stamped
on his hands, they said.
Ray, who is fully accredited to report in Beijing during the Olympic Games,
said he was detained for around 20 minutes in the restaurant and in a police
car before being released, and that his equipment bag was confiscated.
"This was an assault in my mind, I am incredibly angry about this," Ray told
AFP minutes after he was released.
His shoes were scuffed, the back of his trousers and shirt were covered in
grime and he displayed some bruising on his hand.
ITN cameraman Ben England said he tried to film the protest but was
physically prevented from doing so by police who manhandled him and used
umbrellas to try to block his camera.
China has repeatedly pledged to allow foreign broad media freedoms to do
their work during the Games, but have come under criticism for continuing to
stop them from reporting on sensitive issues.
Ray said he clearly told the officers in Chinese that he was a journalist
during the incident, which happened about one kilometre (0.6 miles) south of
the main Olympic Stadium in northern Beijing.
"I tried to explain to them that I was a British journalist but they would
not even let me take out my identifiction documents, they were very rough,"
Ray said.
"I am just wondering where this fits in with China's solemn undertaking to
allow us to report freely during the Olympics."

Maid In Manhattan On
TV
US TV network ABC has reportedly ordered a new series based
on the 2002 Jennifer Lopez comedy Maid In Manhattan.
The network is said to be in negotiations for a series adaptation of the
2002 romantic comedy to be penned by Chad Hodge and executive produced by
Lopez, Joe Roth and the film's producer, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
It is thought the drama/comedy is not a remake of the hit film, which
focused on Marisa Ventura (Lopez), a struggling single mother from the Bronx
who works as a maid at a swanky Manhattan hotel, where a rising politician
guest falls for her after mistaking her for a wealthy socialite.
"The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan," Chad Hodge said.

David Tennant
Is Greenest Star
Doctor Who actor David Tennant has been named the Greenest
Star on the Planet.
Tennant won the title after receiving the most votes out of the top ten
celebrities in Playhouse Disney's Playing for the Planet Awards.
Families across the UK voted online choosing the Time Lord as their
favourite eco-friendly star in the shortlist which included Sienna Miller,
Lily Allen, Lily Cole, Stella McCartney, Madonna and Johnny Depp. Star
couple Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin earned a joint nomination.
Tennant - who is currently appearing in Hamlet with The Royal Shakespeare
Company - drives a hybrid car and actively encourages everyone around him to
get involved and save the planet as his alter ego The Doctor would do.
Peter Duncan, awards judge and ambassador said: "I am delighted that David
Tennant has won the Greenest Star award - he's a great role model for kids
everywhere and clearly is as passionate at saving the planet as his
character 'The Doctor'.
"As we enter the final judging stage for the rest of the categories, I'm
looking forward to seeing some fantastic entries from eco-heroes all over
the country."
The Playing for The Planet campaign launched last year to help pave the way
for a whole new generation of pre-school kids to grow up green.
