Gorillas For BBC Two
The BBC Natural History Unit has been granted unprecedented
access to the world of the critically endangered mountain gorilla for a
documentary series for BBC Two.
Over three 60-minute programmes, cameras will enter this
fragile world and follow the life of one gorilla family as they go about
their day-to-day existence.
The series will meet the team of experts dedicated to caring for them – "the
gorilla doctors" – a group of vets, conservationists and local rangers who
work tirelessly to care for the species.
It will also explore the history of the mountain gorilla, from their
discovery only a century ago, through their ongoing struggle to survive to
the bleak future they face today.
Executive Producer, Sara Ford, said: "We will have privileged access to one
of the planet's most emotionally engaging animal characters.
"This will be the definitive series on the endangered mountain gorilla as
well as an intimate family portrait set against a backdrop of human conflict
and passionate endeavour."

The Queen
To Mark Blue Peter's 50th
The Queen has invited Blue Peter to a special birthday tea at
Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of the BBC's children's
programme.
During the event Her Majesty will recognise four very special Blue Peter
viewers, who will be given the surprise of their life when presenters Helen,
Joel and Andy turn up at their doorstep and invite them to take tea with The
Queen.
They will be presented with a special Jubilee edition of the programme's
highest award, the Gold Blue Peter Badge.
Invited to the tea will be the current presenters Andy Akinwolere, Helen
Skelton and Joel Defries, key production staff and a selection of the
longest-serving presenters from each of the show's five decades.
The film of the Palace tea party will be shown in a special extended edition
of Blue Peter on Thursday October 16 on BBC One.
Tim Levell, Editor of Blue Peter, said: "Blue Peter has been at the heart of
children's lives for 50 years, and we are absolutely delighted that The
Queen is recognising this by extending the kind invitation to us.
"Our four lucky Blue Peter viewers will have the most special day of their
lives - and we hope the experience will be enjoyed by all the children
watching at home."
Former longstanding Blue Peter Editor Biddy Baxter commented: "The Queen was
awarded a Gold Blue Peter Badge on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee, so
what could be more fitting than Her Majesty marking Blue Peter's 50th
birthday by presenting Gold Blue Peter Badges to four outstanding children."
The gold badge is the programme's highest honour and is given
to people who have shown outstanding bravery and courage, or have
represented their country in an international event.
The Queen herself is the owner of a Blue Peter Gold Badge having been
presented with it in 2001.

Jobs To Go At Channel
4
Channel 4 is to make about 150 staff redundant as part of a
cost-cutting programme aimed at saving up to £100m over two years.
The restructure, from a total headcount of 1,000 staff, will form part of a
plan to take £50m out of Channel 4's cost base this year and a further £50m
in 2009.
Channel 4 will cut its programming budget by more than £25m this year and
will cut a further £25m from other areas including marketing, new media and
general overheads.
Channel 4 chief executive, Andy Duncan, has long maintained that by the time
of digital switchover in 2012 the broadcaster would face a funding deficit
of as much as £150m.
Worsening economic conditions would cut total revenues by £50m this year,
the broadcaster said.
It added that it plans a further £50m cost reduction next year "in response
to some of the most challenging economic circumstances in history".
The broadcaster said voluntary redundancies would be offered and a
consultation with staff undertaken "on other ways to minimise compulsory job
losses".
"With revenues falling, we've no alternative but to cut costs," said the
Channel 4 chief executive, Andy Duncan.
"Our objective as a public organisation is to operate at break even while
maximising creative investment".
Channel 4 said that despite "outperforming competitors in recent years" its
economic model was being "continuously undermined by increased competition
and a structural shift in advertising revenues from TV to online".
Its announcement comes days before Ofcom is due to publish its second review
of public service broadcasting.

Five News To Get
Makeover
Channel Five is to revamp its 19:00 news bulletin in a bid to
make it more appealing to men - and will relaunch the programme with Isla
Traquair the sole presenter.
The new format, which will appear early next month, will see the show given
its own identity to differentiate it from the successful bulletin at 17:00
Five News editor, David Kermode, said the changes would see the show better
reflect the audience at 19:00, which includes more men, while the 17:00
bulletin will continue to focus on a more daytime audience.
Traquair will take sole charge of the 19:00 show, while fellow presenter
Matt Barbet will take over the 17:00 programme. The two presenters currently
share hosting duties across the two shows.
The pair became the figureheads of Five News when star presenter Natasha
Kaplinsky went on maternity leave earlier this year.
Kermode said he was using Kaplinsky's absence to experiment with the news
format.
As part of the changes to the 19:00 bulletin, a stable of experts on issues
from property to technology are being recruited, and the pacing of the show
will be changed.
The changes follow the successful relaunch of Five's news output in
February, which saw the 17:00 bulletin nearly double its audience year on
year. The show hit a record audience earlier this month, peaking at 1.1
million viewers.
