Ricky Gervais - Oscars Host?

It has been reported in the American press that Ricky Gervais could be a possible host of next year's Oscars.

According to reports, the comedian is being tipped to front the ceremony after his comic turn at Sunday night's Emmy awards.

"The buzz around town is that Ricky should host the Oscars," a source is quoted. However, his movie Ghost Town has bombed at the US box office which may affect his chances.

But Larry Mark, a co-producer of the 81st annual event, insists that they have not yet decided on a host.

He said: "We haven't made one single phone call. There has been no reaching out."

Government To Revisit Free-to-Air Sport

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham has said the list of sporting events reserved for free-to-air television is to be reviewed.

He told a Royal Television Society conference in London it was time to look at whether the right events were protected to serve the public interest.

He said it was vital the list "moves with the times and people's tastes".

The list of so-called sporting "crown jewels" was last reviewed 10 years ago when Test match cricket was removed.

Burnham said sports broadcasting was "one of the most powerful areas where that sense of community through television is most profoundly felt".

"It is because I believe in television's social role - its power to include and involve - that I continue to believe resolutely in the principle of a protected list of sporting events set by the government," he said.

"But it is also important that this list moves with the times and people's tastes, ensuring that TV continues to bring the nation together and build community."

He said the independent review would "weigh the public interest with the demands and discipline of the market and the implications for the funding and development of individual sports".

Famous Tortoise In TV Trail

Ruth Jones' pet tortoise, Tom, whose recent near-death experience made headline news, is to star in a new BBC Wales TV trail.

Tom, 55, who was saved from death in a glass crusher last month by workers at a Cardiff refuse plant after crawling into the domestic recycling, will make his small screen debut to promote his famous owner's new 12-week show on BBC Radio Wales.

The BAFTA-award winning actress and writer – best known as Nessa in the BBC hit show Gavin And Stacey which she co-created with James Corden – will kick off the first Ruth Jones' Sunday Brunch programme on Radio Wales on Sunday 5 October.

The promotional trail – which will run on BBC One Wales and BBC Two Wales from Monday evening – features Ruth sitting in the kitchen reading a letter from Radio Wales offering her a weekly Sunday morning show on the station.

While she ponders the offer, Tom in the background tumbles from the counter into the recycling.

BBC Wales Head of Promotions Phillip Moss says: "Tom is already a bit of a celebrity in his own right, thanks to the remarkable story of his dramatic 11th hour rescue.

"On screen he was a natural. I'd like to stress that no tortoises were hurt in the filming of the trail."
