Bob Friend Dies
Former Sky News presenter Bob Friend has died at the age of
70 after suffering from cancer.
When he joined Sky News on its first day on air in February 1989 it was his
break as a major TV anchor.
Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corporation, said that Bob was "a
distinguished journalist and an admired broadcaster. He was quick to
understand the power of non-stop programming".
Sky News presenter Anna Botting, who presented alongside
Friend, said: "It is rare you meet someone who encapsulates all that is good
in serious journalism with an extraordinary sense of humour.
"The combination made Bob Friend a distinctive TV personality who was both
authoritative and a delight to watch.
"An instinctive journalist, he would grasp a story instantly. His colleagues
would watch in awe as he asked correspondents - in just three words -
questions which completely captured the essence of a news item."
Former head of Sky News Nick Pollard said Friend had a huge depth of
knowledge and "crucially could convey that in an easy and familiar way to
people, making him a remarkable person to watch on-screen".
The head of Sky News, John Ryley, added: "Bob was Bob - what you saw
off-screen was what you got on-screen.
"It made absolutely no difference - whoever you were he would treat you in
exactly the same way. He was a very humble guy and he had no airs and
graces."

Former Radio DJ
Jailed Again
Former Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning was today sentenced to five
years in prison by a Slovak court for producing child porn, according to
reports.
Slovak television channel TA3 said Denning had been sentenced in the
capital, Bratislava, without a trial after the court accepted a previous
settlement between him and the prosecution.
Denning, 67, reportedly made the pornographic materials in Slovakia between
2001 and 2003. Court officials were not immediately available for comment.
The former DJ was previously serving a four-and-a-half year
sentence on charges of sexually abusing underage boys in the Czech Republic.
He also has previous convictions in Britain for indecent assault on boys,
gross indecency and possessing obscene material.
In May 2005 The Sun newspaper claimed it was responsible for putting Denning
in the dock in Britain by revealing the location of his hideaway on the
Austria-Slovakia border to Austrian authorities.
He was deported to Britain and charged with a string of child sex offences.
He was jailed for four years in February 2006 after pleading guilty to
offences committed in the 1970s and 1980s in the south of England.

Richard
Branson's Next Challenge
Sir Richard Branson's next record-breaking challenge is to be
shown on Virgin 1 as part of its autumn/winter schedule.
The Bransons: Come Hell or High Water is a one-off
documentary in which the 58-year-old entrepreneur and his twenty-something
children Holly and Sam will battle the elements from the US to the UK.
Filming will commence as soon as weather conditions permit, with just 48
hours notice to get on board in New York, with Sam travelling from the North
Pole and Holly from West London.
This documentary will also feature access to the Branson family in the build
up to the adventure with archive footage of Branson's previous sailing
record attempts including the doomed Challenger attempt of 1986 that ended
with a dramatic RAF rescue.
Also as part of Virgin 1's new schedule, the broadcaster will follow Gethin
Jones as he swaps sequins and sticky-back-plastic for tornadoes, volcanoes
and big waves. Gethin Jones' Danger Hunters is a six-part series in which
Jones will step into the "unseen world of obsessive enthusiasts" to chase
the most treacherous and extreme natural phenomena in the world.
The series will be filmed in Hawaii, New Zealand, Indonesia, Nebraska and
South Africa.
Other programmes in the line-up include Sun, Sea and A&E, which documents
British holidaymakers who go away in search of sun but end up in a hospital
bed.
Meanwhile, Virgin 1 has commissioned My Holiday Hell, a six-part
series about British travellers who have been violently kidnapped and taken
hostage whilst abroad.

Emma Bunton Wants
TV Show
Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton is hoping to star in her own TV
show.
The singer got a taste of a TV career last month when she acted as an
assistant to pop star Dannii Minogue on hit U.K. talent contest The X
Factor.
Bunton helped the Aussie judge choose this year's hopefuls to go
through to the show's live finals.
But she admits she finds filming for TV more terrifying than performing to a
live crowd .
She tells Britain's Closer magazine, "I love doing TV, you get such an
adrenaline rush. I'd like my own show one day.
"But it's far more scary than doing a Spice Girls gig - I don't have my best
friends next to me."
