Eleven-Year-Old Wins Countdown Title

An 11-year-old boy has become the youngest winner of Countdown's Octochamp title in 20 years.

Kai Laddiman from Broad Oak, East Sussex, beat Richard Pascoe, a market research manager from Leeds, by 105 points to 55 on today's programme.

This was his eighth win in a row, earning him the game show's Octochamp crown and making him the second youngest to do so in the programme's 26-year history.

Kai trounced his opponent after spotting the nine-letter word 'thirteens' in the last round. He then took six seconds to solve the conundrum, rearranging the anagram 'nicejoint' to form the word 'injection'.

After winning, he said: "It felt brilliant to win, it was so amazing. I wasn't expecting to go that far. I thought I could, but I didn't think I would."

Kai's victory earned him a place in the series final in December.

Prince Charles Birthday Documentary

To mark the Prince of Wales' 60th birthday in November, BBC One will broadcast a new documentary that shows a side rarely seen in public of one of the most influential men in Britain.

Over the course of a year, the BBC has observed the Prince at work and on duty in the UK and abroad, and at home at Clarence House in London, Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Birkhall in Aberdeenshire.

The result is Charles At 60: The Passionate Prince, a fascinating and unique look at the work of the Prince through the causes closest to his heart, his many charities and the ever increasing demands made on him as heir to the throne.

Nick Vaughan-Barratt, Executive Producer, said: "This important documentary sheds new light on the Prince of Wales.

"Many people have a view about the Prince but few people know him well; this film looks behind and beyond the headlines at the man himself.

"It shows the Prince using his substantial influence to further a wide variety of causes – some of them unfashionable, some controversial – and it provides a rare opportunity to hear him speaking directly, not just about what he does but why he is so passionate about the many causes he espouses."

Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One, said: "BBC One's portrait of the Prince of Wales shows him at work in ways we have never seen before. It's a unique and insightful look at the future monarch."

The programme will be narrated by writer Robert Hardman, produced by John Bridcut and shown on BBC One in the lead up to the Prince of Wales' 60th birthday on November 14.

Doctor Who - Prince Charles

The Prince of Wales turned down an offer to star in science fiction hit Doctor Who, the show's producer has revealed.

Speaking at the The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday, writer and executive producer Russell T Davies told 2,000 sci-fi fans the Prince snubbed his invitation to star in the popular BBC drama.

Joined on-stage by actor John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in the  series, Davies  called the Prince a "miserable swine".

Referring to his new book Doctor Who: The Writer's Tale,  Davies was asked about his plans for a Prince Charles cameo in the time-travelling series.

He said: "He turned us down, the miserable swine."

National Television Awards

David Tennant is set to go head-to-head with his Doctor Who sidekick Catherine Tate at this year's National Television Awards.

Both stars have been nominated for Outstanding Drama Performance for their roles as the Timelord and his assistant Donna Noble in the hit BBC sci-fi drama.

This year will be the first time male and female stars have been pitted against each other in the acting category.

Outstanding Drama Performance is a new category, replacing the awards for Most Popular Actor and Most Popular Actress.

Tate, 40, and Tennant, 37, will also compete against Ashes to Ashes star Philip Glenister, 45, and Alex Walkinshaw, 34, for his role as Sgt Dale Smith in The Bill.

The awards, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, pit Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Dancing on Ice against each other in the contest for Most Popular Talent Show.

Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, The Apprentice, Top Gear and This Morning are up against each other for Most Popular Factual Programme.

Jeremy Clarkson and his team have won the trophy for the last two years.

Ant and Dec are heading for their eighth entertainment presenter award, but face competition from Alan Carr, Justin Lee Collins and Paul O'Grady.
