UKTV History Becomes Yesterday

UKTV History will be named Yesterday, it was announced today.

The rebrand followed rival station The History Channel's rebranding as History as part of a new programming strategy that focuses on more contemporary events.

UKTV controller Matthew Littleford, said that Yesterday gave the channel "more warmth and personality".

"'History' gives the impression something is 50, 80 or 150 years old," he said. "Music from 2000 is history, as is the Iraq War," he said.

The channel will broadcast series such as Seven Ages of Rock and The Alan Clark Diaries as well as new acquisitions, including International Terrorism when it rebrands next year.

The first commission under the Yesterday name is documentary feature In the Land of the Free.

Ross and Brand Nominated For Comedy Awards

Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross have both been nominated for prizes in the prestigious British Comedy Awards.

Ross is in line for best comedy entertainment programme for Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, while Brand has been nominated for best live stand-up performer.

Ross has presented the programme on ITV1 since it first launched 17 years ago.

However, he decided to step down from hosting it after he and Brand left obsene messages on actor Andrew Sachs answerphone on Brand's Radio 2 show.

The following public uproar left Ross suspended by the BBC for three months on no pay, Brand resigning from the corporation and Radio 2 controller Leslie Douglas quitting the station.

Reader Comment

It just seems slightly strange to me that Leslie Douglas, who wasn't directly involved with the offending show, quits, while the other two get off with very little punishment at all. Ross can well afford 3 months off, he'll probably enjoy it even, and Brand still has his TV show (No doubt bolstered up by the great publicity he's been getting...) and his stand-up gigs.

If they both win their awards there's something wrong with the world.

But then again, there IS something wrong with the world...

- Deke.

BBC Weatherman Dies

Former BBC weather forecaster Jack Scott has died aged 85.

He worked for the corporation from 1969 to 1983, and in 1975 he introduced the famous magnetic weather symbols to the British public.

He joined the Met Office in 1941 aged 17 and during World War II worked on RAF stations in the Shetland Isles, North Africa and Malta.

The forecaster, who died on Tuesday, auditioned for television in 1968.

In the years that followed, he became one of the mainstays of BBC television and radio weather presenting.

Wayne Rooney Sky1 Series

Footballer Wayne Rooney takes to the nation's streets in a new three-part series. Wayne Rooney: Street Striker, starting on November 30.

Rooney, who discovered his own potential on the streets of Liverpool, visits housing estates, car parks and cobbled streets to uncover untapped teenage footballing talent.

The Manchester United and England striker will whittle down 24 successful applicants, 22 boys and two girls, through a series of  street challenges. When just five competitors remain, they'll go head-to-head to win the prize of a lifetime - a place at next summer's 'Coke Zero' football camp in Brazil.

Featuring tests in all-round skills, the players will be hoping to impress Wayne Rooney as they perform freestyle acrobatic feats combined with solid footballing technique - street style.

Rooney said: “I’ve always said that playing on the streets when I was young helped me a lot. The skills I developed helped me get into the Everton first team. You are working on your passing and touch when you’re playing with your mates and noticing they are getting better all the time.”

“When I was younger I was on the streets until it went dark, I loved it. I never thought of anything else, I just wanted to play football. If we can encourage more kids to do that it would be great.”

BBC Revamps Entertainment Department

The BBC has revamped its entertainment department to bring the genre’s in-house production and development teams closer together in a “push for more commissions”.

As part of the restructure, which the BBC said had been implemented “to further build on the success and growth of the area, and to strengthen the relationship between entertainment production and development”, Martin Scott has been appointed as head of format entertainment.

Scott, who is executive producer of Strictly Come Dancing, will be responsible for both developing new programmes and for continuing to deliver “both high profile and high quality format shows”.

Clare Pizey becomes head of factual entertainment, while Helen Bullough becomes head of entertainment production in Manchester. She will be responsible for all format and factual entertainment from Manchester including Dragons’ Den, Last Millionaire and Mastermind and will work closely with Scott and Pizey on new developments.

In addition, Mark Cossey has been made executive editor of entertainment and multimedia and will work across the entire entertainment and events slate to look at opportunities for exploiting existing programming and developing new multimedia programming.

Jon Beazley, controller of BBC entertainment and events production, said: “This is a defining moment for entertainment production and development. As the programming slate is constantly growing, the need to look after both production and development becomes even more marked.”
