New Drama From BBC
Wales
BBC Wales today announced the commission of two new
home-grown drama series for audiences in Wales.
Crash! and The Fabulous Baker Boys will have creative input from Tony Jordan
and Russell T Davies respectively and will be broadcast in primetime slots
in 2009 and 2010.
Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, said: "It's thrilling to be adding
two such vibrant and contrasting drama commissions to the Wales slate.
"Both are extraordinary, authored pieces and will add new dimensions to the
range of work on offer to writers, producers and directors in Wales."
Crash! will bewritten by a team of Welsh writers led by award-winning writer
Tony Jordan.
The series will follow a group of four young doctors as they embark on their
first jobs at Cardiff Metropolitan Hospital and the steepest learning curves
of their lives.
In each episode, the friends will face new challenges and fresh tests of
nerve. They will make life-or-death decisions and sometimes get things
wrong.
The series is due to go in to pre-production in April next year for
broadcast in late 2009.
Tony Jordan said: "As our first major commission from BBC Wales, we are
incredibly excited about Crash!
"It will give us the opportunity of working with the most talented new and
upcoming writers, actors and directors in Wales."
The second commission will be made by BBC Wales's in-house drama department
and is due for broadcast in 2010.
The Fabulous Baker Boys is written by two of Wales' leading writers – Helen
Raynor, who has network credits including Torchwood and Doctor Who, and
award-winning playwright Gary Owen who has worked with the Royal National
Theatre and the National Theatre of Scotland, as well as community groups
like Bridgend Youth Theatre and the Prince's Trust.
Russell T Davies will act as creative consultant for the project.
The Fabulous Baker Boys is a contemporary drama firmly rooted in the reality
of a small valleys town. When the local factory is threatened with closure
it strikes at the heart of the community.
The series will follow the challenges and triumphs of the workers and their
families as they battle against all the odds to keep their factory going.

Michael
Jackson Big Brother Party
Michael Jackson is set to throw a birthday party in the Big
Brother house in Elstree, Herts.
The singer is planning to celebrate his brother Jermaine’s 54th birthday by
reuniting him with his fellow contestants from the 2007 celebrity version of
the show.
Jermaine – who turns 54 on December 11 – came second to Bollywood star
Shilpa Shetty in the controversial fifth series. The show caused outrage
when Indian actress Shilpa became a victim of racist bullying at the hands
of Danielle Lloyd, S Club 7 singer Jo O’Meara and Jade Goody.
All four are expected to be invited to Jermaine’s bash,
although Big Brother production company Endemol is yet to reply to Jackson's
request to use the house as a venue.

Battlestar Galactica
The American cable network Sci Fi has commissioned a prequel
to hit show Battlestar Galactica.
The new programme, Caprica starring Eric Stoltz will be based 50 years prior
to the start of Battlestar Galactica, which began with the Cylons turning on
their human creators and all but destroying mankind.
Battlestar Galactica, a reimagining of the 1970s original, will finish after
its fourth and final run early next year on Sci Fi.
Caprica, which will also star Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly
Walker, will be a family-based drama, according to reports, looking at the
fallout from the dawn of the age of artificial intelligence.
A two-hour pilot has already been made by series producer Universal Cable
Productions.
Production on Caprica is due to begin in the middle of next year for
broadcast in 2010.
The Sci Fi president, Dave Howe, said: "Battlestar Galactica was absolutely
our flagship show. It put us on the map and helped transform the perception
of the network."
Spin-off film Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, is scheduled
for early summer next year.
