Sky News To Launch In HD

Sky News is to launch in HD in the spring of next year to run alongside it’s current 24-hour news channel.

The channel will be made available to the 1 million Sky customers who have a Sky HD box in the UK.

As part of the channel launch, Sky News will upgrade its studios, production facilities and newsgathering operations at its base in Osterley, and at its busiest bureaux across the UK and internationally.

Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: “Sky News continues to break new ground in television news and it’s only natural for it to become the first UK news channel to launch in HD. It’s great news for our Sky+HD customers, giving them access to award-winning breaking news in HD for the very first time and further expanding the choice on offer.”

Head of Sky News John Ryley said the investment would “define Sky’s strengths, passion and restless pursuit to be first and to be the best”.

“As well as enhanced studio presentation and compelling on-air graphics, news is also about the drama of human emotion: from keynote speeches and police news conferences to picket lines and joyful crowds at ceremonial events. HD is an opportunity to bring our viewers much closer to events,” he said.

Five Gets HD Freeview Slot

Ofcom has allocated the final Freeview HD slot to Five, it was revealed today.

The terrestrial broadcaster has been chosen to offer the free-to-air service ahead of a joint proposal from Film 4 and S4C. It joins the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 with reserved capacity for a high definition channel on Freeview.

Five’s proposal is that it will simulcast its main public service channel programmes at peak time on HD.

In the future, it expects to share its HD channel with another broadcaster during daytime hours and supply other services, such as video on demand in HD overnight.

The initial first three HD services are expected to begin with the Granada region from late 2009. The rest of the UK will follow as each region switches to digital with nationwide coverage by 2012.

Five’s Director of Strategy, Charles Constable, said: “Five is pleased to be awarded the fourth DTT HD stream so Freeview viewers can enjoy the best of our programmes in high definition format. We look forward to resolving outstanding issues with Ofcom so our HD service can join those from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 in due course.”

New BBC Comedy Goes Into Production

Filming has started on a new BBC Two sitcom set in an advertising agency (title to be announced), starring Adam Buxton, presenter Iain Lee, Simon Farnaby, Daisy Haggard and stand-up comedian Jarred Christmas.

The series, which will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and air later this year, comprises six 30-minute episodes.

The series is written by former advertising executive and debut screenwriter Jonathan Thake and script edited by Andrew Collins.

Set in fictional advertising agency HHH&H, the under-worked and overpaid agency staff spend all day trying to persuade you to buy things you don't want with money you don't have.

The series was commissioned by Lucy Lumsden, BBC Controller, Comedy Commissioning, and produced by Bwark, the makers of The Inbetweeners, Angelos and Free Agents.

Lucy Lumsden said: "I'm delighted to have Bwark's next comedy on BBC Two. It is another great example of our commitment to developing the audience sitcom and showcasing exciting new and emerging on and off-screen talent."

Craig Phillips Wants Big Brother To End

Craig Phillips, the winner of the first series of Big Brother, said last night that the long-running reality show has had its day - and "should end now".

Builder Phillips said he could understand why fans are switching off, as there is nowhere left for the programme to go.

The current series has struggled to draw in audiences of more than two million - around 1.5million less than last year.

Phillips, 37, said: "I would like to see it end now. I know they've got a licence for an 11th series, but whether it should come back next year is another matter."

He added: "It's difficult for the producers to do anything that hasn't been seen before. You can't change what the format of the show is - all bosses can do is to introduce tasks and take contestants in and out.

"But those are all the usual tactics. It needs another flavour to it to make it work, a surprise element to spice it up."

Phillips said that producers have discussed the possibility of getting all the past BB champs to come together for next year's show.

He said: "I think it would be a nice way to go if it was a short charity series - it would be the icing on the top of the cake."
