Nick
Knowles Hosts New Lottery Show
Nick Knowles presents a new, fast-paced game show involving
the whole family as part of the BBC's Saturday night Lottery show.
Each edition of Guesstimation sees two families compete against each other
to win a prize. In order to walk away, the victors and contestants have to
outsmart their opponents by weighing up the options and deploying their
skill and judgement to make the best possible guess at what the answer might
be.
Over three rounds, the teams face a series of unusual, fun and occasionally
head-spinning brain teasers. Each team's mission is simple: to "guess"
closest to the correct answer. And to make things more difficult, each round
ends with a studio challenge performed by a special guest.
The family that guesses closest to the result of that challenge wins the
round and earns themselves an all-important guess in the final. That is
where the winning family will emerge triumphant to win the trip of a
lifetime.
The National Lottery – Guesstimation showcases the Dream Number draw which
raises funds for many of the venues that will be hosting events at the
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The series starts on July 11.

BBC Chief Defends
Expenses
BBC Director-General Mark Thompson has defended the £350,000
paid out in expenses to the corporation's top executives over the past five
years as "reasonable and justified".
Following yesterday's publication of the salaries and
expenses of the BBC's 50 top-earning managers, Thompson said it was now the
most open organisation in the public sector.
However, he defended the corporation's refusal to release details of the pay
of its top stars, warning of a "talent drain" to the commercial sector if
the information had to be made public.
Responding to numerous inquiries under the Freedom of Information Act and
general calls for greater transparency, the BBC published thousands of
claims, revealing that executives spent public money on luxury hotels,
vintage champagne, "thank you" dinners, parties and even a private
aeroplane.
In interviews with BBC One's Breakfast and Radio 4's Today programmes,
Thompson said he believed that every claim had been justified.
"Every one of these expenses in my view was reasonable and was justified,"
he said. "I don't believe that I've yet seen any evidence that a single one
of these line-by-line expenses has been in any way unjustified."
He defended his own claim for £2,236.90 of licence fee-payers' money to fly
his family home from a holiday in Italy after he was forced to cut the trip
short to deal with the storm over the lewd messages left by Russell Brand
and Jonathan Ross on Andrew Sachs answering machine.
He said he had been on a driving holiday in a remote part of Sicily at the
time, and cleared the decision with the chairman of BBC Trust, Sir Michael
Lyons, and the independent chairman of the BBC audit committee. "I took the
car, drove 150 miles to the airport, abandoning my family without a car in a
hotel in Sicily. I think, rather understandably, they felt that, given the
circumstances, they should come back too," he said.
Despite the disclosure that 27 executives earned more than the Prime
Minister's £195,000 salary - led by Thompson on £647,000 a year - he
insisted they were paid significantly less than their private sector
counterparts.

Proposals
For Sky To Share Channels Media
regulator Ofcom has today proposed that BSkyB should be forced to
make its premium sports and film channels available to rival
broadcasters.
The regulator said such a move may be a "most
appropriate way of ensuring fair and effective competition".
The proposal was immediately rejected by BSkyB,
saying it will "use all available legal avenues", and that it
"fundamentally" disagreed with Ofcom.
Ofcom has asked interested parties to respond to
the proposals by 18 August.
Ofcom said its proposal would enable more rival
broadcasters to access and offer the channels to viewers, "thereby
promoting choice and innovation".
While users of cable service Virgin Media can
already subscribe to BSkyB's premium sports channels, Ofcom hopes
its proposal will mean a growing number of other companies will be
able to air the channels, either through terrestrial digital
broadcasters or via the internet.
"We do not believe that this proposed remedy would
have a disproportionate impact on Sky, since we consider the
proposed prices are above the level required to allow Sky a
reasonable return on its content costs," said the watchdog.
Telecoms group BT, which runs a TV service called
BT Vision that adds on-demand material on top of Freeview
broadcasts, said it welcomed Ofcom's findings.
Ofcom said that in addition to its proposal that
BSkyB has to offer its sports channels to more rivals, it would be
talking to the Premier League about a further commitment not to give
all the matches to one broadcaster from 2013/14 onwards.
