The Bill Changes Its Tune

The Bill’s is scrapping its familiar theme tune as part of its 21:00 relaunch this summer.

The ITV drama's 180-strong production team is also to be halved as part of the changes.

The Bill executive producer Jonathan Young said: “We want the new theme music to get the audience to concentrate a bit more and focus. It will be something that slows you down a bit and prepares you for something a bit more emotional.”

Only 52 episodes of The Bill will now be transmitted each year rather than 96. This has resulted in the redundancy of 45 staff from production company Talkback Thames..

Young said: “There is a certain amount of survival guilt from everyone left. It has been a fairly traumatic process heightened by the fact that we’ve had to pull together to get the new version ready.”

He added “There is nothing we will deal with at 9pm that we wouldn’t have dealt with at 8pm,” Young said.

“We are very conscious The Bill has a strong family following and we hope the new version will be something they can watch. There will be no bad language, sex or violence.”

The Bill will also now be filmed in HD.

Former Street Actor Launches Own Cheese

Former Coronation Street actor Sean Wilson is fulfilling a “lifelong dream” by launching his own cheese.

The actor – who played nurse Martin Platt in the ITV soap for 20 years until 2005 – said he decided on a career change while waiting for new roles, and is delighted with his efforts so far.

He said: "I wanted to get out there and do something, instead of sitting and waiting for the phone to ring like actors do more and more now.

"I've always wanted to be involved in food. I've got something like 300 cookbooks at home. So I thought why not make a living out of it?

The first batch of cheese will go on sale from next week in selected delicatessens and supermarkets, with Wilson hoping to open his own dairy by September.

"Whenever I decide to do something, I jump in with both feet - I want to make a real success of this. It's a dream for me to do this, something I've always wanted to do."

Wilson is making several varieties of the dairy footstuff under his Saddleworth Cheese brand.

The series will also reveal the results of an exclusive BBC Daytime survey into the top rip-offs which are making Britain fume.

Controller of BBC Daytime, Liam Keelan, said: "I am really pleased to have three seasoned journalists in Angela Rippon, Jennie Bond and Gloria Hunniford tackling a subject that's very close to viewers' hearts."
