Ben Fogle Sick Again

Presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle has been forced by his doctors to pull out of the Mongol Derby, a 1,000km horse race across the desert which takes place next month.

Fogle said: "I have fallen ill again with the same bug and they said I would be foolish to take on such a challenge. It's the first time I have had to give up on something before I even started but it is life threatening and they said I could get it again if I am not fully recovered."

It would appear that University College Hospital in London have lost Fogle's records for the period he was suffering from the flesh eating bug leishmaniasis.

He said: "I got a call from the hospital and they can't find them anywhere so there is no record of some of my rather unique treatments." he says. "They have either been lost or stolen which is a bit frustrating.''

Jonathan Ross Cleared Of Homophobic Comments

Jonathan Ross has escaped censure from media regulator Ofcom over comments on his Radio 2 show that 61 listeners claimed were ‘homophobic’.

Listeners complained to Ofcom after Ross suggested parents should put their sons up for adoption if they wanted a Hannah Montana MP3 player.

During his Saturday morning radio show on May 9, Ross discussed the prizes for the week’s competition with his producer, Andy Davies.

The prizes were primarily made up of merchandise based around US teen sensation Hannah Montana.

Ross said: “If your son asks for a Hannah Montana MP3 player, then you might want to already think about putting him down for adoption in later life, when they settle down with their partner.”

Ofcom received from listeners who expressed concern that the comment were “offensive and derogatory” towards the gay community.

But the media regulator ruled that the comments were not in breach of the Broadcasting Code, taking into account that Ross is a well-known personality who has an “irreverent, challenging and at times risqué humour” that is familiar to audiences.

The Ofcom ruling added: “The comment was clearly presented as a joke intended to make light of the reactions that some parents may have if their child chooses a toy that is very widely recognised to be designed and marketed for the opposite sex.

“The humour was therefore based on the absurdity of the scenario and was not intended to cause offence.”

John Nettles

John Nettles said today he is quitting Midsomer Murders because he does not want to be the oldest detective left on television.

The former Bergerac star films his final scenes in August next year after 14 years as Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby in the popular ITV drama, and told a newspaper he was inspired by David Jason quitting A Touch Of Frost.

Nettles, 65, said: "I have been doing it for 13 years, and that's a long time; now David Jason has thrown off his mantle as Frost I realised I would be the oldest detective in the business."

He added: "People are dying around me and so before the grim reaper comes knocking on my door I want to try some other things."

The actor revealed he wanted his character to be killed off, but he will be written out of the show without meeting a grisly end."

Producer Brian True-May confirmed the show will continue, with an announcement due in October to reveal Chief Inspector Barnaby's replacement.

Reader Comment

Midsomer Murders has gone on a bit too long already-its lost its "mustn't miss this" factor .

When John Nettles quits so should the show.

There are several other detective series worth commiting to TV-like the Alan Banks novels of Peter Robinson set in the Yorkshire Dales

Neil Bentley Takes Heart 106.2's Drivetime

Neil Bentley is taking over Heart 106.2’s weekday drivetime show from Emma B.

Bentley will be on air between 16:00 and 19:00 from Monday to Thursday, starting on August 3. Emma Bunton’s Feel Good Friday show airs in the slot on Fridays.

He currently hosts Saturday and Sunday afternoon shows on the Heart network and takes over at drivetime from Emma B, who is moving to Ibiza with her family.

Bentley said: “Drivetime is a dream opportunity and I’m looking forward to becoming a permanent feature on the school run and guiding London’s workforce home with More Music Variety.”

Heart 106.2’s programme director Adrian Stewart said: “Neil has proved himself a worthy addition to the Heart London team. He has worked hard and connected well with our listeners over the past few months, working alongside Emma Bunton at Breakfast and presenting high profile Heart network shows at the weekend. I’d like to thank Emma B for all her hard work over the past five years on Heart Drivetime."

Vatican Radio Takes Commercials

The voice of the Roman Catholic Church - Vatican Radio - is to start broadcasting commercials for the first time in its almost 80-years on air.

The first company to run its commercials will be an Italian gas and electricity company - Enel.

Until now Vatican Radio has been wholly funded by the Catholic Church at a cost of some £17m a year.

Founded in 1931 by Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, Vatican Radio is the international broadcast platform for the Catholic Church.

It transmits its programmes in 45 languages on FM and the internet with the aim of spreading the message of the Pope and the Church's Christian teachings.

But the station has recently been looking for outside financial help.

That has now come in the form of Enel. Its commercials are likely to be in keeping with the measured conservative tone of the station.

In return, Vatican Radio could receive some £155,000 over the next six months.

Enol says it is an honour to be chosen as the first advertiser on Vatican Radio as, it says, the company has some of the shared values of the Catholic Church.
