Griff Rhys Jones Upsets Anglers

Comedian and television presenter Griff Rhys Jones has upset anglers by encouraging canoeists to "disturb as many fisherman as possible".

He has further risked offending fishermen by saying "if a man gently paddling a canoe down a river is a disturbance, then long live that disturbance".

Anglers say they have a "legal right to go fishing in peace".

Jones is presenting a BBC series about British rivers in which he canoes along hidden waterways.

He first set about anglers in a interview for BBC Countryfile magazine, published this week.

"I've met a lot of fisherman and decided that we should disturb as many as possible," he said.

"What we all need to remember is that the river isn't there for a few, but for the many."

He has since tried to clarify his points, while sticking to his main argument that "canoes disturb neither fish nor fishermen".

"In the article which has caused this apparent stir, I clearly say that access should not be allowed on some areas of river - 'we don't want canoes churning up the salmon beds of the Wye'," he said.

"I am a supporter of all angling associations and thoroughly respect the rights of fishermen to peacefully fish on riverbanks, but I am also a great supporter of canoeists and want to see as much access to the rivers of England and Wales as is readily available in Scotland and much of the rest of the world."

Mark Lloyd, chief executive of Angling Trust, had been upset by the initial comments.

He said: "We take great exception to Griff Rhys Jones's calls for canoeists to cause disturbance to anglers and to trespass."

He added that anglers contributed £3.5 billion every year towards the British economy with £25m of that on licences.

Czech Republic Withdraws From Song Contest

The Czech Republic today announced it is quitting the Eurovision Song Contest, saying there is a lack of interest at home in the musical event.

The country, which made its debut in 2007, came last with no points in one of the semi-finals in May.

Its previous two attempts failed to reach the final, with rock band Kabat also coming last in the qualifying round two years ago.

It was the first time in five years that a country had failed to make a mark on the scoreboard.

Noel Edmonds Gets Married

Noel Edmonds says he has "found his soul mate" after marrying for the third time.

After a civil service in Gloustershire, Edmonds and his new wife, 40, were blessed in the 13th-century Church of St Mary's.

Afterwards, Edmonds spoke of his delight at being joined with the woman he loved.

"This has been a magical day, it really has," he said.

"I don't know what to say, I'm so happy. I can't remember being this happy and this content.

"We met on October 6, 2006 at six minutes past 11 in the morning. She walked into the dressing room I had at Deal or No Deal and was introduced as the stand-in makeup artist who would be doing me for the next three days.

"Then something strange happened, and here we are."

Edmonds and his bride turned down big-money magazine offers for the rights to their wedding, instead preferring a simple affair with fewer than 100 guests.

Big Brother Contestant Quits

Big Brother contestant Kenneth Tong has walked out of the house on Channel 4 show - less than a week after entering as one of five new housemates.

Tong, 24, entered the house on Friday night, minutes before his girlfriend, glamour model Karly Ashworth, was evicted after losing the public vote.

He scaled a wall in the garden to exit the show.

Friday night's eviction has now been cancelled. Details of refunds for phone voters are on the Big Brother website.
