Rod Stewart: One Night Only

ITV1 is to screen Rod Stewart: One Night Only, on Saturday, December 5.

Hosted by Ben Shephard, Stewart performs a selection of his best-known songs from his back catalogue and tracks from his new Top Ten album, ‘Soulbook’, in front of a specially invited audience of fans. In addition to this he performs an exclusive collaboration with one of Britain’s biggest bands, Stereophonics.

John Kaye Cooper, Controller of Entertainment at ITV, said: “ITV is delighted to be bringing Rod Stewart back to our screens, and we are looking forward to a fantastic performance from a renowned star.”

Rod Stewart said: “I’m thrilled to be premiering some of the tracks from ‘Soulbook’ in front of my British fans and I can’t wait to play these songs that are very dear to me.”

X Factor Sound Levels Manipulated

Producers of The X-Factor have been accused of manipulating the sound levels to keep the only group, Irish twins John and Edward Grimes, on the programme.

One outraged technician said employees had been threatened with the sack if they exposed their weak voices.

According to a report, a studio source said: “We were told to lower the twins’ microphones and raise the levels on the backing track so the pre-recorded session singers covered the sound of their appalling vocals.

“The only time we were told we could raise the levels on their microphones was when they were rapping.

“One of the crew refused as he said it was unfair, but he was told he would no longer have a job if he didn’t follow instructions.”

A spokeswoman for production company talkbackThames did not directly deny the claims, saying that all 'X Factor' hopefuls receive an “equal amount” of technical help for their live performances.

She said: “All contestants sing live on Saturday night and all are given an equal amount of technical support to ensure they give the best live performance they can.

“Technical support is standard for all artists when giving live vocal performances.”

STV Sues ITV

Scottish broadcaster STV has launched a fresh legal action against the ITV network in a dispute over new media rights.

STV said it is owed up to £12m after ITV entered into commercial agreements without obtaining consent from STV Central and STV North.

Earlier this year, ITV launched legal proceedings against STV after it decided to drop peak time shows like The Bill.

It claimed this is in breach of existing network agreements and is suing STV for a headline total of £38m, which it says it is owed for the dropped programmes.

Other shows taken off STV's schedule include Midsomer Murders, Kingdom, Al Murray's Happy Hour, The Fixer and Doc Martin.

STV has already filed a counter claim for £35m against the larger broadcaster.

In a statement STV said: "Despite the new media rights being acquired and held for the benefit of all Channel 3 licensees, ITV Network and ITV Broadcasting have entered into commercial agreements without obtaining STV's consent.

"These commercial agreements use and exploit new media rights in STV Central and STV North's licence areas."

The broadcaster is seeking an injunction to prevent the companies from entering into any further new media rights agreements without STV's consent.

STV Group chief executive Rob Woodward said: "ITV is imposing its brand and service within the STV licence area without our consent, and is not operating in the interests of all the Channel 3 licensees.

"ITV's actions are detrimental to STV's brand and business and they are inhibiting our ability to grow as a digital broadcaster.

"We are ultimately seeking clarity on how new media rights can be exploited, and damages for ITV's actions."

He added: "We have tried to resolve this through dialogue with ITV but unfortunately we now have no alternative but to resort to legal action."

Freeview HD Timetable

The BBC has confirmed the timetable that will make HD services on Freeview available to 50 per cent of the population in time for next June's World Cup, and to 98.5 per cent of the population by the end of digital switchover in three years' time.

The Corporation said that In order to bring the benefits of HD on Freeview to as many people as quickly as possible, the Freeview HD rollout has been accelerated with an advance network so that viewers in London, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Bradford and Birmingham receive signals by the end of March 2010.

The majority of viewers will come into coverage at the same time that they go through digital switchover – including viewers in Manchester in December 2009 and those in Cardiff, who will get Freeview HD by the end of March 2010. For the 7 per cent of the UK population who switched before December 2009, a retrofit programme will bring them into coverage before the end of November 2010.

New DVB-T2 technology will deliver an increase in capacity of 67 per cent to the BBC's Multiplex B, efficiently creating the space needed for UK public service broadcasters' HD transmissions.

To view Freeview HD, audiences will need equipment containing this new technology. Freeview HD receivers (set-top boxes, digital television recorders and integrated televisions) will be available from early 2010.

Caroline Thomson, the BBC's chief operating officer, said: "This is a terrific step forward, and it's a great achievement that the BBC and its partners have been able to work together to overcome some really difficult technical challenges to bring HD to the Freeview platform through world-leading innovation. We're really excited about the prospect of seeing BBC HD and HD channels from the other public service broadcasters on Freeview next year."

X Factor - Jamie Archer

Ousted X Factor contestant Jamie Archer has admitted that he felt "depressed" and "demoralised" by some of his experiences on the show.

The 34-year-old pub singer from London, voted out on Sunday after a sing-off with Lloyd Daniels, said he realised the show was not right for him and made him lose confidence in his abilities.

Archer found it difficult to get to grips with the song choices and realised his "journey had come to an end".

He said: "It was really demoralising for me, because it made me feel like 'Is it me? Am I being difficult? No-one knows what to do with me - maybe there just aren't any songs?' but I just got on with it really."

He dismissed suggestions that he had planned to quit the show, following disagreements with mentor Simon Cowell over song choices.

"I didn't say I was leaving, I just said 'Maybe it's the wrong show for me'. It was after we did Unchained Melody and we tried it, and I had to change my song last minute.

"I said at this point 'Maybe this show isn't really the right show for me because we keep having to change my song, which means we quite clearly don't know what to do with me'."

Live Event For Brooklands FM

Community radio station Brooklands FM is giving local musicians the chance to perform live on air and help raise money for the Sam Beare Hospice, Weybridge.

The station will present a special Christmas edition of its popular Live Lounge events from its new studios in Weybridge on Monday December 28.
