Got News...
Bob Crow, General Secretary of the National Union of Rail,
Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), is to be a guest panellist on Have I
Got News For You, the BBC's top-rating topical comedy quiz show, for the
first time.
He will join host Alexander Armstrong and fellow guest panellist Jimmy Carr
for the sixth programme in this, the 38th series, to be shown on BBC One on
Friday, November 27.
Born in Wapping East London in 1961, at the age of 16 Crow joined London
Underground as a track worker and soon became active in the union.
In 1992 he was elected to the union's National Executive, and two years
later became Assistant General Secretary. In February 2002 he was elected to
the top job of General Secretary of the RMT.
Crow said: "As a long-standing fan of Have I Got News For You I am well
pleased to be the first trade union leader invited onto the show. I'm
looking forward to an evening of sparring with Ian Hislop, Paul Merton and
the rest of the panel. I've sat across the table from some sharp operators
in my time, but I know that the Have I Got News For You crew will pose a
different challenge altogether."

X Factor Cleared Of
Homophobic Complaint
An edition of The X Factor which received complaints that
Dannii Minogue had made a “homophobic” jibe about contestant Danyl Johnson
has been cleared by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom.
The show, broadcast last month, saw Johnson give a performance of 'And I’m
Telling You I’m Not Going', which was originally composed as a female lead
vocal for the musical Dreamgirls.
In her critique, judge Minogue said the singer had given a “true X Factor
performance” but added: “If we’re to believe everything we read in the
papers, maybe you didn’t need to change the gender reference in it?”
Fellow judge Simon Cowell said Minogue was playing “games” and she later
apologised to anyone who may have been offended saying of her comments:
“They were only said with humour.”
Ofcom said it received nearly 4,000 complaints, the majority of which were
concerned that Minogue’s remarks were malicious and homophobic and based on
newspaper reports about Johnson’s sexuality.
Some viewers were concerned that Minogue seemed to be referring to the
contestant’s sexuality in a pre-watershed family show.
Those in charge of compliance emphasised the show is live and unscripted and
Minogue’s comments had been prompted by discussions in a video-taped
introduction to the performance about changing the gender of the song.
Johnson also said in a statement that he was not offended by Minogue’s
comment, saying they chatted afterwards.
The regulator found: “In Ofcom’s view, it was not outside the established
nature of the programme for an X Factor judge to make such a comment as
Dannii Minogue’s especially in circumstances where the performer had placed
information about his sexuality in the public domain ...
“Ofcom did not discern a pejorative or homophobic intent behind her
comment.”
The regulator found the show was not in breach of broadcasting rules and the
reference to Johnson’s sexuality was made only indirectly and was therefore
unlikely to shock viewers.
But it warned broadcasters generally to exercise caution over rules
concerning sexual orientation and violation of human dignity.
Ofcom said: “Broadcasters need to exercise caution in this area,
particularly when the subject of sexual orientation may foreseeably arise in
the context of a live programme.
“In no way should the ’outing’ of participants in television programmes be
encouraged, condoned or legitimised.”

Britain's Got Talent Cleared By Ofcom
Britain’s Got Talent has been cleared of breaching
broadcasting rules after hundreds of viewers complained about contestants
including Susan Boyle and Hollie Steele appearing upset during the live
final stages of this year’s series.
Broadcasting regulator Ofcom received more than 400 complaints from viewers
about the final stages which aired in May.
Incidents included 10-year-old Steele breaking down after forgetting the
words to 'Edelweiss' and being given another chance to sing again.
At the end of the live final Boyle appeared shaken when she came second to
Diversity.
Natalie Okri, also 10, also appeared upset when she did not make it through
to the final and 12-year-old dancer Aidan Davis also looked unhappy when
told by judge Simon Cowell that his performance had not been as good as it
had been the previous evening.
But Ofcom said its biggest number of complaints – 259 out of 409 – was from
viewers who thought that Steele should not have been given a second chance.
The majority of the rest of the complaints concerned the welfare of the
younger contestants.
Those in charge of compliance for the ITV1 show said BGT producers received
50,000 applications from children – over 75% of the total applications made
to appear on the 2009 programme.
They said due care was taken of the welfare of child participants and the
duty of care continued after they left the programme.
They added that the decision to give Steele a second chance was taken live
and made very quickly. Cowell was also said to have spoken to Davis to
ensure he knew how much he admired his talent.
Ofcom found the show did not breach broadcasting rules.
It said: “Ofcom has not found any evidence to suggest that any of the
children involved in the programme had anything other than a positive
overall experience through their involvement, and notes in particular that
the children who complainants were particularly concerned about went on to
participate successfully in the BGT tour.”
Regarding complaints that Steele was allowed a second chance, Ofcom noted
the terms and rules of the competition made it clear that rules could be
changed at producers’ discretion – and all the performers agreed to these
rules.
Ofcom received 53 complaints regarding the alleged exploitation of Boyle,
who was considered by some to be too vulnerable to put in a talent contest.
But the regulator said its remit did not extend to protecting the welfare
and dignity of those aged 18 and over who take part in programmes unless the
individual or someone acting for them directly makes a formal complaint
about alleged unfair or unjust treatment – and no such complaint was made.
The watchdog also said it took into account that it was a talent contest and
disappointment to all but the winner was pretty much “inevitable”.

Community Radio Station Closes
The UK's first fully licensed full-time community radio
station is to close down at the end of the year due to lack of funding.
Forest of Dean Radio, which was awarded an Access Radio licence in 2002,
will close at midnight on December 31st.
The station first started in 1995 with a number of short-term RSL broadcasts
and went on to win the first Community Radio licence in 2005.
A statement from the station said: "Despite many months of effort the
project has been unable to secure sufficient funding and resources to enable
it to continue until the end of its present five year license at the end of
2010.
"Management have taken this decision now in order to preserve the core of
the project assets so as to provide a foundation on which community media
work in the future may be built, although what form that may take is
currently uncertain."

Psychoville Returns To BBC Two
The BBC has announced announced that
Psychoville, written by
Reece Shearsmith and
Steve Pemberton, will
return to BBC Two for a one-off special programme to be shown next
year, and a new, six-part second series.
The dark comedy thriller was centred on very
different characters, who each received an anonymous mysterious
letter claiming: "I know what you did..." The last series episode
concluded the story at Ravenhill Hospital, for the completely
insane, with a huge explosion. In the new series, all will be
revealed as to who managed to survive the blast.
The first series of Psychoville, shown earlier
this year, has recently been nominated for two British Comedy
Awards.
Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith said: "We're
delighted that BBC Two commissioners have responded in the right way
to the notes we sent bearing the words 'We know what you did'. We
look forward to being able to tickle and terrify our audience once
again - preferably at the same time."
Cheryl Taylor,
Controller of Comedy Commissioning, said: "It's great news for all,
including all the dedicated Psychoville fans that this wonderfully
creative series from Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith will
return to dazzle and delight BBC Two viewers next year."
Executive producer
Jon Plowman said: "We are
thrilled that our twisted baby, Psychoville, has been
re-commissioned. We look forward to intriguing and scaring the
audience next year and the year after".
The new series of Psychoville will be filmed next
year.

I'm
A Celebrity - Katie Price Quits

Katie Price has walked out of ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me
Out of Here! after less than a week on the show.
She was repeatedly voted by viewers to take part in the show's "bushtucker
trials" and when chosen again in last night's programme, she said: "Someone
else has to do it. I'm just not doing it anymore."
She had been chosen last night to appear in a trial featuring
snakes in which she was to compete with former boxer Joe Bugner.
ITV announced her departure in a one-line message posted on its website
which read: "Katie Price has left the jungle."
The 31-year-old returned to the Australian rainforest camp last week, five
years after first appearing on the programme.
She said she hoped it would bring "closure" to her relationship with
ex-husband Peter Andre, with whom she became close while appearing on the
show.
