John Hurt -
Quentin Crisp John Hurt
reprises his role as English eccentric Quentin Crisp in An
Englishman in New York, which picks up where the 1970's classic The
Naked Civil Servant left off.
The 90-minute drama will be aired
on ITV1 on Sunday, December 27.
Sex in the City star Cynthia Nixon also stars as Penny Arcade, the
performance artist and playwright who formed a close bond with Crisp
in his latter years.
In 1975, at the age of 66, openly Gay writer Quentin Crisp (John
Hurt) has given up on finding fame and so it comes as rather a
surprise when the British TV film The Naked Civil Servant, which is
about his life so far, makes him a celebrity overnight. However,
while Quentin had successfully pushed a nation out of the closet,
the sentiment was not reciprocated; the nation, it seemed now
merely, ‘had a name to put to their demon’. Refusing to return to
anonymity and following an invitation to New York, Quentin finds
himself in the country where he is welcomed with open arms.
John Hurt said: “We made The Naked Civil Servant in 1976 and the
whole sexual revolution, in terms of homosexuality, had not
happened. It was a really shocking subject matter. The chemistry of
it was that both filmmaker and audience came together at the same
time so what the film had to say in terms of what Quentin had to go
through in order to get what he had to say understood, happened at
exactly the right moment. That is something you can’t time. You
can’t say, ‘Let’s do it right now because it’s the right moment.’
…We had no idea that it was the right moment nor did the public. The
public didn’t know they were going to be able to take it.
"People still come up to me and say, ‘That was the day that I came
out.’ It’s a wonderful feeling to have been a part of something
which moved people to such an extent.
"One forgets that Crisp enjoyed had a whole 20 years of life after
The Naked Civil Servant. He used to call that time the 'twilight' of
his life. I suggested to Quentin that he should change ‘twilight’ to
‘sunset’ of his life because in fact that is what it was. It was a
20 year period right up to the age of 90.
"When I got this script from Brian Phillips I just felt that he had
had done a superb job and then somewhat more personally, when
Richard Laxton came on board, things really began to take a lot of
shape and I was very keen to do it…Things rattled along pretty
quickly from that point. I was very keen that it had to be shot in
New York absolutely 100% as it had to be authentic. It had to have
America actors.”

What Katie Did
Next
Viewers will get to see the explosive aftermath of Katie
Price’s dramatic exit from I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! after ITV
announced a further series of What Katie Did Next today.
ITV2 has recommissioned a second series of the fly-on-the-wall programme,
which follows the glamour model who is also known as Jordan.
Price, who recently divorced husband Peter Andre, promised there would “lots
of drama” in the new programme.
The first series of What Katie Did Next followed her life immediately after
the couple’s very public split, showing her having a wild holiday in Ibiza
and being swamped by fans at book signings.
ITV2 said the new eight-episode series, to be broadcast early next year,
will “see her continuing her life as a model, mother and businesswoman as
she heads home from Australia.”
Price said: “Viewers have seen what I went through in the jungle, and now
they’ll get to find out exactly what happens next. As ever, there’s bound to
be lots of drama!”
The programme is a co-production between ITV Studios and Price’s own
production company Pricey Media.
Zai Bennett, director of digital channels and acquisitions at ITV said: “The
first series of What Katie Did Next was a huge success for ITV2 and we’re
delighted that Katie will continue to share every facet of her amazing life
with our viewers first.”
Price walked out of the jungle on Monday morning after being chosen
repeatedly for stomach-churning bushtucker trials by the public.
She announced live on air during her exit interview that she was splitting
from boyfriend Alex Reid.
