Gene Barry, who starred in the 1970s British TV series The Adventurer, has died at the age of 90.

The actor's son Fredric said he died on Wednesday at a rest home in the Los Angeles neighbourhood of Woodland Hills.

In The Adventurer, the American actor played a wealthy jetsetter who worked as an undercover agent for British intelligence.

In the US, he was best known for his role as the well-dressed man of action in the television series Bat Masterson, Burke's Law and The Name Of The Game.

Barry is survived by his three children, Michael, Fredric and Elizabeth, as well as three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

C4 Alternative Christmas Message

Picture Channel 4

Television presenter Katie Piper, who survived an acid attack, will deliver this year's alternative Christmas message on Channel 4.

Piper, who has had more than a year of reconstructive surgery after she had sulphuric acid thrown in her face by an ex-boyfriend, will deliver a message of "hope and optimism", said the broadcaster.

The traditional alternative to the Queen's Christmas Day broadcast is now in its 17th year, and has previously been delivered by speakers including Brigitte Bardot, Ali G, Marge Simpson and the parents of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

Piper, whose career as a model and TV presenter was destroyed by the attack, appeared on Katie: My Beautiful Face, part of Channel 4's documentary series Cutting Edge, in October.

"This year, acid attack survivor Katie Piper will deliver Channel 4's traditional alternative to the Queen's Christmas Day broadcast," said Channel 4.

"Following the remarkable Cutting Edge documentary which followed Katie's story from beautiful, budding TV presenter to the horror of a vicious acid attack by her ex-boyfriend, the message will join Katie at home with her parents as she considers the extraordinary response to Katie: My Beautiful Face.

"Reflecting on her progress over the last 12 months – her message will be one of hope and optimism. With key themes including the importance of family and of accepting those who look different, the message will see a contemplative and more confident Katie, with big plans for the new year ahead."
