X Factor Winner
Joe McElderry tonight won the coveted X Factor title and a
life-changing record contract.
The 18-year-old student from South Shields won the eagerly-anticipated final
of the hit ITV1 contest, beating Olly Murs in a public vote.
He hugged his mentor, fellow Geordie Cheryl Cole, and said:
“I can’t even speak, thank you so much everyone.”
He added: “I can’t actually speak and I just want to say thank you to
Cheryl, she’s been an amazing mentor.”
He also thanked the other judges and everyone who voted for him.
McElderry’s single, The Climb, will be available for download
from midnight and will be in shops on Wednesday, host Dermot O’Leary said.
Simon Cowell told McElderry he was ``gutted for Olly'' but ``thrilled for
you because you're brilliant''.
It was Cole’s second victory in a row, after mentoring Alexandra Burke in
last year’s competition.
Bookmakers said McElderry was now the red-hot favourite to secure Christmas
number one, with Ladbrokes cutting his odds of earning the top spot to 1/8.
Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg said: “Joe is the toast of fans up and
down the country. For weeks now he’s looked like the only realistic winner
and has justified his billing.
“Christmas chart success is virtually assured.”
William Hill said it now faced a £1 million payout on McElderry, including
£7,000 to his family members.
Spokesman Rupert Adams said: “Cowell has killed us.”

BBC Two's dark comedy Psychoville took the best new TV comedy

And it was success also for Katherine Parkinson, the star of Linehan's the

Simon Cowell Wants Williams As Judge

Simon Cowell has told today's News of the World he wants
superstar Robbie Williams to join the X Factor team as a fifth judge.
The show boss has told how he is planning a radical shake-up next year which
is likely to include an extra "novelty" category to take in acts such as
Jedward.
He said: "I would like to get Robbie Williams. He's got good
instincts.
"He doesn't take himself too seriously and he's a fun guy to be around.
"I'd love to have him there because I think he would be a good judge, full
stop.
"That's why I like having Louis Walsh on the panel. He is fun to work with.
"I don't know if Robbie would want to do the show as he's so busy but he
would be great. A lot of things are going to change if we bring the show
back."
Cowell denied rumours former Spice Girl Mel B will be taking a seat on the
judging panel in 2010 in place of Dannii Minogue.
He said: "We have not approached Mel B to do the show. We met with Mel two
or three years ago at the time we brought Cheryl in and didn't know if
Cheryl was going to accept.
"No deals have been concluded for next year, nothing. So we're not in a
position to talk to anybody about contracts."
Meanwhile, Robbie Williams narrowly missed enduring another
disastrous performance on The X Factor - after he started singing too early.
The superstar took to the stage of the talent show last night to join
finalist Olly Murs for a duet of his hit song Angels.
Murs sang the opening of the track and introduced his idol to the crowd as
the singer emerged from the back of the stage.
But Williams was too eager to begin his part in the rendition, and began to
sing his words before the music for the second verse had kicked-in.
The embarrassed star shrugged off the cringeworthy mistake by laughing and
shaking hands with Murs, who prompted the hitmaker of his place in the
track.
The mishap mirrors his live UK comeback on the show in October - when he
appeared sweating and nervous after a jammed stage door prevented him from
getting out to his audience.

Essex girl Stacey Solomon's dreams of winning The X Factor
were dashed as she was voted out of the contest last night.
She told the audience, "I've loved everything. All the songs I've sung, all
the famous people I've met. It's so cool."
The two remaining pop star hopefuls will go head to head tonight to decide
who will be crowned X Factor champion 2009.
