BBC Panellist Dies

Broadcaster John Cushnie, a regular panellist on Gardeners' Question Time, has died following a heart attack.

A landscape gardener, who ran his own business, he featured on the BBC Radio 4 show for some 15 years.

BBC Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer said he was "a brilliantly knowledgeable panellist" who "laced every programme with warmth and joy".

"His trademark acerbic wit was deployed with terrific timing against a wide variety of plants he did not like - and it was always done with an affectionate twinkle in his eye, with an exuberance of voice and with unrelenting sympathy for fellow gardeners."

Cushnie featured on Gardeners' Question Time earlier this week. He gave frequent talks on gardening across Northern Ireland and Britain and also published a book, Ground Cover.

Jam and Jerusalem Axed

The BBC has axed Jennifer Saunders' sitcom Jam and Jerusalem after three series, according to reports.

The pair, both 51, rose to fame on ITV's Girls on Top in 1985, but last year declared they would no longer work together as a double act. Jam and Jerusalem, aimed at older viewers with Saunders playing upper crust Caroline, and French the factory worker Rosie, was their last project.

French said: "There was just this gradual realisation that maybe there are other things we'd like to do; maybe it's a young person's game."

Pauline McLynn, who played Tip Haddem, said: "It's a blow, I'll not lie to you. That was one of the toppest jobs ever... and it breaks my heart. It's not a great decision on behalf of the BBC."

Brookside Close For Sale

Fans of defunct soap opera Brookside could own a piece of TV history - a house on the famous close.

The Channel 4 series - starring Jennifer Ellison - was axed in 2003, and the 13 properties in the famous Merseyside Close in Liverpool were left abandoned.

Most of the buildings didn't even have running water, electricity, kitchens or toilets, and fans feared they would be bulldozed to make way for new properties.

But a year ago the entire street went under the hammer for a bargain £735,000 and the homes will go on the market this year.

Each house is set to sell for around £200,000.
