On Screen Funeral For Street Character

Coronation Street's much-loved Blanche Hunt will be given an on-screen funeral later this year with her granddaughter Tracy Barlow returning from prison for the ceremony.

The show's producer Kim Crowther promised that  Blanche, played by the late Maggie Jones, will be given a 'fitting send-off'.

Jones died in hospital last month at the age of 75 after a period of ill health.

The screen funeral will also see the return of Maggie's granddaughter Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), who is in prison for murder, the producer said.

A funeral was held for Jones in London last month, and a memorial service is to take place at Salford Cathedral on February 25.

Blanche's absence from screens has so far been explained by an extended break in Portugal with a friend.

Channel 4 Seeks Volunteer

Channel 4 is seeking a terminally ill patient to donate their body to be mummified for a new show show.

The programme will explore the mysteries of ancient Egyptian embalming, which was believed would help people reach the afterlife.

Adverts have been placed asking for dying patients interested in participating to get in touch.

Channel 4 said: "If the scientists are able to find a donor, we would be willing to follow the process."

It is understood the project - which has been proposed by production company Fulcrum TV - is in its very early stages and may not actually be made.

Nigel Lythgoe Offer To Represent Ross

American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe, who was involved in Jonathan Ross's early career, says he plans to contact him about opportunities in the US.

The pair worked together while Lythgoe was controller of London Weekend Television entertainment in 1995.

Ross announced last week that he was leaving the BBC after 13 years.

But Lythgoe, who is a judge on BBC One reality show So You Think You Can Dance, added: "I don't know if he wants to go and crack new territories."

Ross, 49, was the BBC's highest paid star. On Thursday, he issued a statement saying he had decided not to renegotiate his contract when it ends in July.

He added that the decision was not "financially motivated".

Lythgoe, said he thought Ross would be able to find work "anywhere that he likes".

He said: "I would have thought that quite a few stations would want him to go and join them.

"It isn't now about money, it is just about enjoying himself and doing what he wants to do.

"I think he's smart, quick witted and very, very talented. I would have thought he just wants some time out."
