Ross
Kemp In The Amazon
Sky1/HD has announced details of Ross Kemp: In The Amazon
(working title); a two-part documentary looking into the socio-economic and
environmental pressures facing the Amazon regions of Brazil and Ecuador.
The documentary will be broadcast on Sky1/HD in April and will explore the
legacy of devastation created by a burgeoning global desire for energy, food
and mineral resources.
The programmes investigates how oil companies are affecting
large tracts of the Amazon in a desire to satisfy the planets energy needs,
how the turf wars that arise over cattle ranching and soy plantations have
escalated, how the global demand for cocaine is leading to further
deforestation and how the rise in the price of gold has meant that people
are tearing up the rainforest as they seek to earn a living.
Ross Kemp said: “While filming in Nigeria last year, I saw first-hand how
much man’s greed has cost the environment. By travelling to the Amazon, we
hope to highlight some of the well-known and lesser-known causes of
deforestation.
"I am no environmentalist, but no species has interfered with
the earth’s temperature in such a short space of time as we have. That
damage as yet is unquantifiable. However, the survival of the world’s
rainforests, in particular the Amazon, is crucial to the future of the human
race."

Emmerdale Actress Was Bored
Actress Anne Charleston has admitted she got 'seriously bored
and depressed' towards the end of her time in Emmerdale.
The actress played Lily Butterfield in the rural soap until last year, but
the character rode out of the village on a motorbike with Eddy Fox (Paul
Darrow).
She said: "I really wanted to do the show and I love the show and the
character, but they just started to turn her into a special extra and I was
seriously bored and depressed - I thought it was a pity because I think she
had enormous possibilities.
"They just weren't giving me enough to do and I was away from home. If
you're away from home, you need to be doing something interesting, otherwise
it becomes a bit unbearable. If they'd done something good with the
character I'd have loved to stay on."
However, she was pleased her exit stayed true to the spirit of her
character.
"At least they gave me something to do in the last few weeks. That was quite
fun. She was a mad character so at least they gave her back the qualities
she had when she first came in. I went out on a bit of a high, which was
nice."

BBC Cut Backs

The BBC has today declined to comment on newspaper
reports it plans to close two radio stations and scale back websites to save
£600m.
According to The Times, BBC Asian Network and 6 Music will be closed under
the proposals.
The Times said the plans are due to be made public next month, to reduce the
BBC's services and focus on quality over quantity.
A spokeswoman for the corporation said she would not comment on
"speculation".
The Times claims the report is currently being considered by the BBC Trust,
the corporation's governing body.
The BBC Switch and Blast! websites are also to be closed as part of a larger
reduction in the BBC's web presence, the newspapers have alleged.
Director general Mark Thompson will reportedly announce the plans next
month.
The Times states the BBC's budget for foreign acquisitions, which currently
stands at £100m, will be cut by a quarter.
This could mean the end of such US TV shows as Heroes, Mad Men and The Wire
on BBC channels.
The BBC's website budget, which currently stands at £112m, will also be cut
by 25 per cent.
The Times says this will be achieved by halving the number of web pages and
reducing its staff by a quarter.
