BBC Daytime
Programmes

BBC One and Two's daytime programming has been criticised for
"lacking quality" and being too similar.
Long-running antiques and property shows make viewing "too formulaic and
derivative", audiences have told the BBC Trust.
The BBC's governing body has said it is concerned that the broadcaster's
reputation will suffer as a result.
It is supporting moves to invest money in more original drama and consumer
affairs programming.
Factual entertainment and the amount of drama acquired from other sources,
including from abroad, would decrease as a result.
The Trust is also urging BBC chiefs to look at further ways of improving the
quality and distinctiveness of the daytime output.
Shows which are under scrutiny include Cash In The Attic, Homes Under The
Hammer and Bargain Hunt, which are regularly featured in the weekday daytime
schedules.
The Trust, which published its review on BBC One, Two and Four, acknowledged
that the programmes are popular, but said viewers had objected to how often
they are shown.
It concluded that BBC bosses still faced a "significant challenge" in
meeting this objective.

Sky New
Complaints Rejected
Media regulator Ofcom has dismissed almost 2,800 complaints
relating Sky News's coverage of the general election.
Viewers had objected to Adam Boulton's treatment of the Lib Dem leader, Nick
Clegg, and his on-screen clash with the former Labour spin doctor Alastair
Campbell, as well as Kay Burley's interview with an electoral reformist.
Boulton, the Sky News political editor, attracted 1,787 complaints. A total
of 671 viewers complained about an interview between Boulton and Campbell on
Monday May 10. Most of the complainants objected to what they viewed as
unprofessional behaviour by Boulton, who appeared to lose his temper after
Campbell accused him of being "upset that David Cameron is not prime
minister".
"Two well-known personalities from the worlds of politics and journalism
were taking part in a debate about a matter of topical and serious concern,"
said Ofcom. "We considered that although the tone and content of this
exchange was unusual, it would not have been beyond the likely expectations
of the audience for this channel."
Ofcom also dismissed 1,116 complaints about Boulton allegedly "heckling"
Clegg about his expenses during the second leaders' debate, which was hosted
by Sky News.
The media regulator also dismissed 1,008 complaints about Burley's interview
with electoral reformist David Babbs on May 8.

New Emmerdale
Character
Jake Roche, the 17-year-old son of Coleen Nolan and Shane
Richie, has been signed to a regular role in Emmerdale.
Roche will play Isaac, a college student who starts dating timid teenager
Hannah Barton (Grace Cassidy).
The actor said: "I am thrilled to be part of such a great team. Everyone has
made me feel so welcome. After watching Emmerdale for years on TV, I still
have to pinch myself on set as it’s all very surreal. My family have been
very supportive as always and we all can’t wait to see my first episode."
Emmerdale producer Gavin Blyth said: "Jake is a great addition to the cast.
Isaac will be a fun character who will offer some light relief for Hannah as
her family face their darkest hour."
Roche will arrive on screen as Isaac in August and has signed a contract
with Emmerdale for the next few months.

Coronation Street Actor Fined
Coronation Street actor Craig Charles has allegedly been
fined for falling asleep in his dressing room.
The 45-year-old has played cabbie Lloyd Mullaney in the Weatherfield drama
since 2005.
Charles reportedly fell asleep on set when he was due to shoot a scene which
then had to be scrapped.
New series producer Phil Collinson is thought to be clamping down on
tardiness in the actors.
It is alleged that he is to fine stars 15 per cent of the episode fee,
between £500 to £1,000.

Sharon Osbourne Will Never Return
Sharon Osbourne will never go back on The X Factor.
The music manager, who left the UK reality TV programme in 2008 after Dannii
Minogue joined the show and won with her act Leon Jackson - has confirmed
she will never make a return to the show.
"You can’t go back," she said. "You have to keep going forward. I really
believe that.
"It was a great time in my life and I’m really proud of it because it’s the
best show in the entire world but for me, professionally, I have to keep
going forward."
Osbourne – who also had her own reality TV show The Osbournes - is currently
working as a judge on America's Got Talent alongside Piers Morgan and Howie
Mande.
She is adamant that no amount of money would make her change her decision –
and she would even turn it down if she was offered £10m.
She said: "It’s not the principle of it all, it’s just you move on in life."

BBC 6 Music To
Stay
The BBC Trust has rejected the BBC's plans to close the
digital radio station 6 Music.
In his response to the BBC strategy review, BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael
Lyons said that the case for the closure of 6 Music had not been made.
He said the trust - which represents the interests of licence fee payers -
would consider closing 6 Music only as part of a wider strategy on the
future of digital radio.
But the trust accepted plans to close the Asian Network, cut 25 per cent of
the online budget and close teen service Blast!
A high-profile campaign to save 6 Music was set up after a strategic review
of the BBC's services was announced in March.
The planned closures identified in the review needed the approval of the BBC
Trust.
The trust published its initial conclusions to the strategy review alongside
the BBC's Annual Report.
Sir Michael Lyons: "You inevitably have some tough discussions"
The trust said: "As things stand, the case has not been made for the closure
of 6 Music.
"The executive should draw up an overarching strategy for digital radio. If
the director general wanted to propose a different shape for the BBC's music
radio stations as part of a new strategy, the trust would consider it.
"The trust would consider a formal proposal for the closure of the Asian
Network, although this must include a proposition for meeting the needs of
the station's audience in different ways."
The trust noted that the reach of the audience for 6 Music was 600,000 at
the time of the review, and that it had risen to 1 million listeners a week.
It noted the "significant show of public support" there had been since the
closure plan was announced.
It said 78% of the online responses to the public consultation had focused
on 6 Music.
