New Steve Coogan Series

Steve Coogan is to return to TV with a new comic creation – himself.

The star, who has appeared in a number of Hollywood movies in recent years, will appear in a new semi-improvised comedy series The Trip.

The BBC Two series sees Coogan and co-star Rob Brydon playing versions of themselves as they take a trip around the north of England to undertake a series of restaurant reviews.

Coogan – whose hit characters have included Alan Partridge and Paul Calf - launched his most recent comedy persona Tommy Saxondale in 2006.

The six-part series is directed by Michael Winterbottom.

In the series Coogan is commissioned by a Sunday newspaper to review half a dozen restaurants but splits from his food-loving American girlfriend with just days to go.

He enlists the help of Brydon to accompany him on the journey as they head off around the Lake District, Lancashire and the Yorkshire Dales, discussing life and food.

US star Ben Stiller also makes a guest appearance as Coogan’s agent.

Announcing the series, the BBC said: “In the style of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', the story is fictional but based around their real personas.”

Another comedy to feature in the new BBC Two season is Whites, a series about a chef who is past his sell-by date starring Jonathan Creek actor Alan Davies.

C4 To Screen Basketball

Channel 4 has confirmed it will screen four highlights programmes from this summer's EuroBasket qualifying programme.

The GB men's and women's teams will appear in double headers around the country, with be GB Women v Slovakia and GB Men v Ukraine from the NIA in Birmingham and GB Women v Germany and GB Men v Bosnia & Hergovina from the Liverpool Echo Arena the games to be featured by Channel 4.

The one hour highlights programmes will be broadcast on four consecutive Sundays from August 22.

British Basketball's James Tombs said: "To get the support of a major broadcaster like Channel 4 is great for the sport. We have worked with Channel 4 before so it was the obvious platform and partner for what should be a feast of basketball.

BBC Breakfast Goes To Salford

The BBC is moving its flagship early morning breakfast show to Salford, it has been confirmed.

Presenters and staff on the programme were informed of the final decision today, while the BBC is due to make a formal announcement later.

The daily show is fronted by Bill Turnbull, Sian Williams, Susanna Reid and Charlie Stayt.

The BBC has already announced that several other departments will move to its new northern base in Salford.

Helen Boaden, Director, BBC News, said: "BBC Breakfast is the most watched breakfast programme in the UK and loved by millions. It has a fantastic connection with audiences across the UK and we want to build on that. Clearly this involves personal and professional decisions for the talented team who make Breakfast but we will be supporting them to reach an informed judgement about the move."

It is currently broadcast from the BBC's Television Centre in west London and runs for three hours on week days and on Sundays and four hours on a Saturday.

The programme celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008.

Piers Morgan Signs CNN Deal

Piers Morgan has signed a £5.5m deal to replace Larry King.

The Britain's Got Talent judge agreed to the four-year contract with US network CNN and will work for 30 weeks of the year so is expected to move to the States.

Chat show legend Larry is due to step down from Larry King Live later this year and rumours had been rife as to who would replace the 76-year-old interviewer.

American presenters Ryan Seacrest and Katie Couric were said to be in the running but producers thought former newspaper editor Piers would make the ideal replacement.

However, Piers' new deal means he will have to quit his role on the Britain's Got Talent judging panel because he will not have enough time to commit to the programme.
