Edwin Drood
Cast Announced
Matthew Rhys will take the lead role in a major BBC
adaptation of Charles Dickens's great unfinished work The Mystery Of Edwin
Drood.
The Welsh actor will play John Jasper in the murder mystery.
Also appearing in the two-part drama, part of the 200th anniversary
celebrations of Dickens's birth, are New Tricks star Alun Armstrong and
Julia McKenzie, star of ITV's Miss Marple stories.
Tamzin Merchant, who played Catherine Howard in The Tudors, will also
feature, as well as Freddie Fox, son of screen veteran Edward Fox, who will
play Drood. Rory Kinnear will also take a major role.
The book was famously incomplete when the master writer died in 1870.
But it has been completed by writer Gwyneth Hughes for the BBC, and a
murderer will finally be exposed.
Jasper is a choirmaster who develops a murderous hatred of his nephew Edwin
Drood, who is engaged to 17-year-old beauty Rosa Bud.
Dickens suffered a stroke while midway through writing Drood and died the
following day, June 9 1870, having never regained consciousness. However a
brief outline of the plot was relayed to his friend and biographer John
Forster.
The drama will be screened next year on BBC Two.

Mayday Mayday
A new ITV1 documentary series following the men and women of
the RNLI debuts on Tuesday, September 13.

These volunteers operate lifeboats all round Britain’s
coastline, ready to come to the aid of those in trouble on the water.
The four-part series, Mayday Mayday, features incidents from
all over the UK, using footage from the crews' state-of-the-art helmet and
boat cameras. This unique view of the lifeboat crews on active duty forms
the basis of the stories and lets viewers experience for themselves what the
RNLI volunteers see as they attend emergency callouts at all times of day.

Kermode said: "I'm massively excited about taking the helm at Daybreak. I
know it's a fantastic team, there’s lots to do and I can't wait to get
started.”

Rolling Stone Saves Radio Station
Keith Richards has donated £3,000 to help save a radio
station struck by lightning.
The founding member of the Rolling Stones sent the cheque to the Isle of
Wight's Angel Radio to help fund repairs to its transmitter, which was
knocked out when it was hit in July, forcing the station to go off air for
three days.
Director and programme controller Bev Webster explained they had broadcast
an urgent appeal for funds and "couldn't believe it" when the 67-year-old
rocker came to the rescue.
She told the Isle of White County Press: "I don’t know if Keith listens to
us on the internet, or maybe he tuned in when the Rolling Stones played the
Isle of Wight Festival a few years ago, but we couldn’t believe it when we
received his cheque in the post."
Webster admitted station staff thought the gesture was a "joke" at first,
but Angel Radio accounts confirmed it was a genuine donation from the
musician.
She added: "We thought the cheque was a joke. But accountants confirmed it
was the real Keith Richards."

Friends
Comes To An End On E4
Repeats of US sitcom Friends will end this weekend on E4,
making way for new comedy on the digital channel.
The last scheduled episode of the hit show, which will be the 2004 series
finale, will be broadcast on Sunday at 20:00.
Channel 4 will continue to hold the licence to broadcast the show until the
end of the month, when it will pass to Comedy Central.
The broadcaster said the move was to free up funds for new comedy shows.
E4's autumn schedule is set to introduce a number of new comedy shows to the
channel.
Noel Fielding's Luxury Comedy sees the The Mighty Boosh creator in a half
filmed-half animated show, while stand-up comic Chris Addison will host Show
& Tell in which three aspiring comics each bring items to "show" and "tell"
the audience.
There will also be new shows for comedy music group The Midnight Beast and a
return for Comedy Labs and PhoneShop.
New US comedy sitcoms including New Girl starring 500 Days of Summer's Zooey
Deschanel and Happy Endings featuring 24's Elisha Cuthbert will be
introduced to the channel.
Channel 4 has broadcast Friends since 1994 with its last ever episode
drawing an audience of 8.6 million viewers.
Since then, the show has been on constant rotation on Channel 4 and E4,
where it consistently attracted an average audience of almost 400,000.

Demo Takes
Proms Off Air
Live coverage of a Proms concert by the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra was pulled last night after disruptions by protesters chanting
'Free Palestine'.
The BBC was forced to take the broadcast off air because of
the outbursts during the event at London's Royal Albert Hall.
Gil Shaham was about to play Bruch's violin concerto
conducted by Zubin Mehta when booing and shouting began.
It is believed that around 40 protesters bought seats, which
would have cost them around £20 each.
A BBC spokesman said: "We regret that as a result of sustained audience
disruption within the concert hall which affected the ability to hear the
music, tonight's Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Prom was taken off air."
