Downton Abbey Return Date

ITV has confirmed that the award winning drama Downton Abbey will return for the second season later this month.

The Julian Fellowes drama, which stars Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville, begins the new eight-part series on Sunday, September 18 at 21:00 following The X Factor.

Series two of the period piece, which will conclude with a Christmas special, will explore the lives of the Crawley family during the First World War.

Executive producer, Gareth Neame, recently predicted that Downton Abbey could last for six series and with an average viewing figure of 8.8m last autumn, it's little wonder.

Jonathan Ross Relaxed About New Show

Jonathan Ross will be "comfortable" if his new ITV1 series fails.

The chat show host will return to screens tonight and is looking forward to working for the commercial network after leaving the BBC in the wake of the 'Sachs-gate' scandal over offensive calls he and Russell Brand made to Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs on air.

He said: "It was right for me to leave the BBC. If I'd stayed that story would never have gone away.

"Even now they're trying to beat people up about wages. Someone else can get it in the f***ing neck now. I've had my turn.

"At ITV the show will either do well and be re-commissioned or do badly and stop. And I would be comfortable with either option."

Jonathan also admits he was "a bit of a t**t" when he made the calls to the star as part of comedian Russell's radio show.

He added to Time Out magazine: "I was a bit of a t**t. It wasn't in the cold light of day the funniest joke I've ever made, but then it wasn't my decision to broadcast it. I'll be brutally honest and say that I really don't think about it much now.

"It happened and it blew out of control. But all sane people knew that it was a fuss about nothing."
