Building Starts
On New Coronation Street Complex
Coronation Street stars William Roache and Michelle Keegan
donned hard hats and picked up spades to 'break the ground' at their future
new home today.
The duo were marking the imminent start of building work on the 7.7 acre
site where ITV is creating a bespoke stand alone production and studio
centre for the world's longest running drama.
Joined by representatives from the Coronation Street production team, ITV
senior management, project partners and local councillors, William Roache
said "It’s over fifty years since I first walked on to a Coronation Street
set, and now I’m here with Michelle, starting the build of our new home –
the one that will take us well in to this century, and it feels fantastic”.
Kevin Lygo, Managing Director, ITV Studios said: “Our move to MediaCityUK is
an historic one that will continue our commitment to the North, ensuring our
longevity as the major programme maker in the region and make us a crucial
part of Europe’s biggest media population. It is a very exciting time."
Building on the new site is expected to continue until spring 2013. The
production will then relocate from central Manchester to the new centre,
just across the water from the heart of MediaCityUK which is to be home to
ITV Studios’ production and management teams, regional news and support
staff.

Cameras To Be Allowed in Courts
Television cameras are to be allowed into criminal courts in
England and Wales for the first time.
Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke said he would end the ban to improve public
understanding of justice.
Broadcasting will be initially allowed at the Court of Appeal, with a plan
to expand to crown courts.
Only the judge's sentencing remarks will be broadcast, rather than footage
of offenders, victims, witnesses and jurors.
Filming is currently banned by two Acts of Parliament, meaning Mr Clarke
will legislate to allow cameras in. There will also be extensive
consultations with top judges, meaning it is not yet clear how filming will
work in practice or when it would start.
Announcing his plans in a written statement to Parliament, Mr Clarke said:
"As a starting point, judgements in the Court of Appeal will be broadcast
for the first time. I want to see this expanded to the Crown Court, but I
will work closely with the Lord Chief Justice and judiciary on how this
could be achieved. I am clear that this must not give offenders
opportunities for theatrical public display.
"We will work to ensure this does not hinder the administration of justice
and that it protects victims, witnesses, offenders and jurors. Collectively,
these plans will open the justice system in an unprecedented manner,
allowing the public to judge for themselves how we are performing and to
hold us to account."
Mr Clarke also announced extensive plans to publish data on the efficiency
of local courts, including the time it takes for an offender to be sentenced
after they have been caught.

No More Mr Bean
Rowan Atkinson is refusing to resurrect his iconic character
Mr. Bean, because he is convinced he is now too old to portray the bumbling
fool.

He debuted the character on TV in 1989 and the series
continued until 1995, before it was adapted into two big screen versions.
But Atkinson is adamant he should say goodbye to Mr. Bean for good because
he's convinced he won't be able to do the role justice.
He tells the Daily Mail, "I've got a feeling I probably won't play the
character (Mr. Bean) again. Never say never, but I just feel I'm getting too
old for it.
"I've always liked Mr. Bean as a cartoon-like figure, who doesn't really age
much. I've always seen him as an ageless and timeless being and I'm clearly
not ageless and timeless. The older I get, I feel I am less qualified to
play him."

New Tricks -
New Series
The BBC One drama New Tricks has been commissioned for
another two series, for broadcast in 2012 and 2013.
The series, following an unconventional bunch of ex-coppers
brought out of retirement to work on unsolved and open cases, sees old
school policing clash with today's political correctness. However, they may
be eccentric, bend the rules, follow their hunches and ignore procedure, but
they get results.
Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: "New Tricks
continues to grow and is a huge favourite with the audience making it the
highest rating drama on TV so far this year. Amanda, Dennis, Alun and James
are a dream team that BBC One viewers have taken to their hearts and I'm
thrilled the show will be back on our screens for two more years."
Filming on the next series will begin later this year on location in and
around London.

ITV
Under Pressure Over £1m Winner
ITV is under pressure after it emerged that the first £1
million winner of the new gameshow Red Or Black? was jailed for beating up a
woman.
Bricklayer Nathan Hageman was previously reported to have been jailed for
attacking his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend.
It has now been reported that the 31-year-old, from Reading, attacked a
woman, thought to be his ex.
ITV is holding talks following the revelations, with pressure on the
broadcaster to strip Hageman of his win.
An ITV spokesman said: “In light of recent developments, ITV and Syco (Cowell’s
production company) are making inquiries to establish the facts.”
It is reported that ITV knew about Hageman’s five-year jail sentence, of
which he served two-and-a-half years, but it is thought that they did not
know that the victim was a woman. Hageman previously told journalists that
he attacked a male victim after he started getting threatening calls from a
man in Reading.

Reader Comment
I can't believe ITV actually put this programme on air. It
is without doubt the worst case of dumming down yet to be seen. The fact
they have given all this money to a violent woman beater just confirms my
opinion of the show is correct.
