Red or Black? Two Contestants Dropped

ITV has removed two contestants from its gameshow Red or Black? after producers tightened checks on those taking part.

The move comes after the £1m top prize was won on Saturday by a man who was revealed to have a conviction for assault.

The remaining shows will go ahead, but two programmes will have a reduced number of contestants.

The show, presented by duo Ant and Dec, is running all this week on ITV1.

An ITV spokesman said: "ITV has reviewed the background checks on remaining contestants from Red or Black?

"As a result of this we have asked producers to remove two contestants from this week's shows.

"Red or Black? will continue on these two occasions with seven, rather than eight, contestants." He said that all parties were "working closely and collaboratively together to ensure that the show continues its success."

Freesat Sales

More than 2 million people now have Freesat, the free-to-air satellite TV service, it was revealed today.

The company also claimed that 47% of its users had defected from BSkyB.

The joint venture between the BBC and ITV aims to provide a free alternative to Sky's digital service.

Freesat's managing director, Emma Scott said: "We launched three years ago and in that short time have quickly established ourselves as a real challenger and genuine alternative to pay-TV."

However, sales figures may not accurately reflect the service's user base. Many TVs are now sold with a Freesat tuner included, but it could go unused if customers opt to connect the set to their existing set-top box or aerial.

Freesat does not have exact figures on how many "active users" it has, but said there are currently 1.2m viewing homes.

Winner To Keep His £1m

The first £1 million winner of Simon Cowell's gameshow Red or Black? will apparently keep the prize money despite revelations he was jailed for beating up a woman.

The news came as ITV said it would be tightening background checks on contestants following the controversial win by Nathan Hageman.

The 31-year-old bricklayer was initially reported to have been jailed for attacking his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, but it has since been revealed that he attacked a woman, thought to be his ex.

There has been pressure on the broadcaster to strip Hageman of his win, but reports indicate he will be paid the cash.

In a statement an ITV spokesman said: "ITV and Syco (Cowell's production company) have made thorough enquiries into Nathan Hageman's participation on Red or Black?.

“Whilst producers were aware that Nathan had served a prison sentence for assault they were not fully aware of facts which have since emerged. As a result of this ITV is reviewing the background checks on all remaining contestants in the show."
