Inside Soap Awards

Two of the actors at the heart of a controversial assisted suicide storyline have been shortlisted for a string of prizes at this year's Inside Soap Awards.

Emmerdale viewers saw Pauline Quirke and Danny Miller's characters, Hazel Rhodes and Aaron Livesy, being asked to help end the life of Jackson Walsh, played by Marc Silcock, after he was left paralysed in an accident.

Quirke and Miller are up for the best actress and best actor award respectively while the storyline is nominated for best exit alongside Coronation Street veteran Bill Tarmey's last scenes as Jack Duckworth.

Quirke is also shortlisted for best newcomer while Miller is nominated for best dramatic performance.

In the best actress category, Quirke faces competition from Claire Cooper, who plays Jacqui Ashworth in Hollyoaks, EastEnders' Jessie Wallace, who plays Queen Vic landlady Kat Moon, and Coronation Street's Katherine Kelly whose character, Becky McDonald, is due to leave the soap early next year.

The other nominations for best actor are Chris Gascoyne, who is Coronation Street's Peter Barlow, Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning in EastEnders, and Emmett J Scanlan, who plays Brendan Brady in Hollyoaks.

The awards, voted for by readers of Inside Soap, are handed out in a ceremony in London on September 26.

The magazine's editor, Steven Murphy, said: "The storylines over the last year have been some of the most exciting and dramatic we've ever seen in soapland, and we're looking forward to revealing the winners at this year's ceremony. Remember, you can still vote for Best Soap on our website."

Weather Presenter For Channel 4

Channel 4 News has announced that Liam Dutton is to join the programme as weather presenter.

Currently working across BBC News, BBC World News and BBC Breakfast, Dutton will become the first ever dedicated weather presenter for the flagship 19.00 programme.

Dutton, a qualified forecaster, trained and certified by the Met Office, will present forecasts five nights a week, offering viewers and users a distinctive perspective on weather news. From time to time, he will also contribute to the main programme - talking to presenters Jon Snow, Krishnan Guru Murthy, Cathy Newman or Matt Frei to add insight and information on specific weather stories.

His brief will incorporate analysis of UK and International weather news, potentially related to climate change, health, food, or the impact of weather on other aspects of people's lifestyles such as travel, finances & welfare. Dutton will also have an important online role, leading Channel 4 News' new weather website and using social media to discuss weather with viewers.

This is the latest in a series of appointments for Channel 4 News. Matt Frei has joined as Washington Correspondent, and will also join the presenting team. Cathy Newman has also become a presenter - joining Frei and completing the line-up alongside Jon Snow and Krishnan Guru-Murthy. Michael Crick replaces Cathy as Political Correspondent - and Jackie Long has joined as Social Affairs Editor.

Liam Dutton said: "I can't wait to be part of Channel 4 News' history as the programme's first ever Weather Presenter. With weather so frequently making headlines at home and abroad, the interest in how and why things are happening is becoming ever greater. I'll be looking to feed our fascination about weather through the power of television, online and social media in a way that's distinctly Channel 4."

Actor Quits New Tricks

Actor James Bolam is leaving the crime drama New Tricks after eight series, the BBC said today.

Bolam revealed the news to producers during filming of the last series which has just finished airing.

New Tricks features ex-police officers who have come out of retirement to investigate unsolved crimes.

The corporation says it is in talks with Bolam - Jack Halford in the show - about returning for one episode next year.

Richard Burrell, the show's executive producer, said: "We are very sorry to see him go, but we fully understand that the time and commitment involved in filming a series is quite considerable.

Bolam's character retired from the force when his wife Mary died following a hit-and-run accident.

Bolam's real-life wife, Susan Jameson, plays the wife of Armstrong's character, Brian Lane, in the series.
