Inside Soap Awards
Jessie Wallace has been crowned Best Actress at the 2011
Inside Soap Awards.
Wallace, who last month jilted fiance Vince Morse the day before her
wedding, had already been celebrating after turning 40 at the weekend.
Her win was the icing on the cake for EastEnders which scooped five awards
including Best Soap at the event at north London venue Gilgamesh.
Viewers have seen Wallace’s Albert Square character Kat Moon suffer terrible
heartache after burying what she thought was her son Tommy’s body, only to
discover her baby had been swapped and was still alive.
She has also endured relationship battles with husband Archie as they
struggled to cope with the rollercoaster of emotions involved. Her real-life
woes came after 50-year-old catering boss Morse admitted sending an explicit
picture of her to his ex-girlfriend.
Inside Soap readers voted 10-year-old Maisie Smith – who plays Albert
Square’s Tiffany Butcher – Best Young Actor, while Tameka Empson won
Funniest Performance for her portrayal of EastEnders’ beautician Kim Fox.
The elaborate Muslim marriage ceremony of Tamwar Masood and Afia Khan in
Albert Square took home the Best Wedding prize at the awards, sponsored by
Jackpotjoy.com.
Emmerdale’s Danny Miller won two awards for the second year in a row, for
playing Aaron Livesy.
Miller took home Best Actor and Best Dramatic Performance for the
controversial assisted suicide storyline, which saw Aaron being asked to
help end the life of Jackson Walsh, played by Marc Silcock, after he was
left paralysed in an accident.
Coronation Street won the Outstanding Achievement award for the explosive
tram crash and live episode with which the soap celebrated its 50th
anniversary.

Alex Ferguson - TV Has Too Much Power
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes television
has too much power over the English game.

In an interview with BBC North West Tonight, Ferguson said TV
controls aspects of the game because of the vast amount of money it
provides.
He claimed clubs had lost control over fixtures and this had had a
detrimental effect on those competing in Europe.
“When you shake hands with the devil you have to pay the price,” he said.
“Television is God at the moment.”
He added: “It shows itself quite clearly because when you see the fixture
lists come out now, they can pick and choose whenever they want the top
teams on television.
“You get some ridiculous situations when you’re playing on Wednesday night
in Europe and then at lunchtime the following Saturday. You ask any manager
if they would pick that themselves and there’d be no chance.”
I do think Manchester United have almost had a lion’s share of TV revenue
over a period of time and it has helped build a fantastic stadium in Old
Trafford and helped build Sir Alex’s teams with star players
Former FA chief executive Brian Barwick
And clubs, the 69-year-old Scot added, are not even getting the kind of
money they deserve from TV. He said the Premier League sold their product to
200 countries and “when you think of that I don’t think we get enough
money”.
Former Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick agreed that
football is now “super-reliant on television” but suggested that TV revenue
had helped facilitate United’s success under Ferguson.
“Sir Alex’s comments always have to be taken seriously – he is a very wise
and experienced football man,” Barwick told BBC Sport.
“But on this one, I do think Manchester United have almost had a lion’s
share of TV revenue over a period of time and it has helped build a
fantastic stadium in Old Trafford and helped build Sir Alex’s teams with
star players.
“Manchester United will always do well in the television market because a
lot of people follow them.
“The Premier League should be applauded for the number of countries it has
got the game to. It has been a massive success story.”

X Factor
Contender Pulls Out
X Factor contender Goldie Cheung has pulled out of the show
despite getting though to the judges' houses stage of the competition.
Her withdrawal means another contestant will be thrown a lifeline and
replace her in the over-25s group mentored by Louis Walsh.
The singer said: "The X Factor has been a fantastic experience and very
challenging for me at times. I was very grateful to Louis for offering me a
place in the final.
"However, I have decided to withdraw from the competition because I knew I
would miss my family so much. I wish all the finalists the best of luck and
look forward to watching them every week."
Hong Kong-born Goldie made a name for herself in the first episode of this
series when she overcame her nerves to put on an eccentric performance that
ended with her wrapping herself around Gary Barlow.
Louis said: "It was such a shame Goldie had to pull out of the competition.
I thought she had great potential to entertain viewers in the live shows.
"But it has given someone else an amazing opportunity and although it was a
hard decision of who to replace her with, I am pleased with my choice."

Blue Peter
Moves North
Blue Peter will be broadcast from its new home in Salford for
the first time today, featuring a new set and a remixed theme tune.
Presenters Helen Skelton and Barney Harwood will front the show, but
producers have decided not to replace Andy Akinwolere, who left in June.
After 53 years in London, the show is among those to have moved in order to
boost the BBC's presence in the north.
Blue Peter will get a new garden on a roof of the MediaCityUK studio
complex.
Tim Levell, the show's editor, said the programme's purpose would remain the
same but that the move was a chance to refresh it.
"Underlying everything, Blue Peter has the same values," he said.
"We are about telling younger viewers about things that are interesting to
them - that's always been the same. The wrapping is slightly different but
the present inside is still the same."
The classic theme tune has been remixed by production duo Banks and Wag. "It
is updated," Levell said. "It's got that electro-pop feel."
He described the new studio as a "wired media hub" in which celebrity guests
would speak to viewers live on the phone and webcams.
A number of BBC departments, including Children's, Sport and 5 live, are
moving to MediaCityUK in Salford.
Akinwolere's departure was "really nothing to do with Salford," Levell said.
The new roof garden will feature items from the old garden,
such as a ship sculpture and a statue of the beloved Blue Peter dog Petra.
But it has not yet been landscaped and will not be seen on screen for some
time.
