Coronation Street Actress Quits

Actress Helen Flanagan is to give up her role as Coronation Street's Rosie Webster after 12 years on the soap, it has been confirmed by ITV

"I feel that the time has come for me to move on and try something new," said the 21-year-old, who has been part of the show since she was nine.

The actress will shoot her final episodes in December but will be seen on screen until February 2012.

She was the second person to play Sally and Kevin Webster's eldest daughter, originally played by Emma Collinge.

"During my time growing up on Corrie I have made some amazing friends and learnt an awful lot," said Flanagan.

Her departure follows reports she had been suffering panic attacks on Coronation Street's Manchester set.

X Factor Viewing Figures Down

BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing came out on top in the battle for Saturday night viewers when the show went head-to-head with ITV1's The X Factor.

Overnight figures showed the dancing show had 9.6 million viewers when it finished at 20.15, while The X Factor, which was 30 minutes into the show at that point, had 8.8 million.

A BBC spokesman said programme-makers were 'delighted' with the viewing figures for Strictly.

He said: "It is great that more and more viewers keep tuning in to enjoy what is turning out to be a fantastic series."

A spokesman for ITV said The X Factor had a peak audience of 11.9 million on Saturday night.

He said: "The X Factor continued to be the UK's most-watched entertainment show and ITV1 was the most popular channel across peak time."

The Magicians Returns

The Magicians returns to BBC One in the New Year, with a live new format and new host.

Following last year's ratings success of over six million viewers, the 2012 series will be extended to six 75-minute programmes which will transmit live – which will see the first time a magic series has been transmitted live on the BBC in over 30 years.

In addition to the new format, The Magicians has anew host in Scottish-born television host Darren McMullen, in his debut UK primetime presenting role.

McMullen has fronted national shows in both Australia and the US and will preside over the celebrities and magicians as well as announcing the live audience vote each week.

He said: "I can't wait to host live shows here. The Magicians is a huge entertainment show and talked about around the world so I can't wait to be at the heart of it. Being a live show, the pressure really will be on the magicians and whether or not they can pull off dangerous stunts in front of a live audience. I'm certainly going to have to have my wits about me!"
