Walsh Will Not Be Sacked
Simon Cowell has given his personal assurance that Louis
Walsh will not be sacked from The X Factor in an effort to boost falling
viewing figures, the Irish talent show judge said today.
Walsh, 59, said the show's supremo sent him a text last night, saying: "I
give you my word your job is safe."
There have been reports that Walsh - who told a contestant she was a bully
and then apologised - will go as part of a shake-up which would also see
Cowell, 51, parachuted back in to reverse a 2.5 million audience slump.
Cowell left to launch the show in the US.
Last night, 300,000 fewer viewers tuned in for the results show compared
with last Sunday's figures.
An average 11.3 million saw Sami Brookes voted off when she finished in the
bottom two with Kitty Brucknell.
At the start of the programme, Walsh apologised to contestant Misha B, whom
he and fellow judge Tulisa Contostavlos accused on Saturday of bullying
fellow contestants backstage.
Contostavlos told her: "You being so feisty, you can come across quite mean
to certain contestants." Walsh said one of his acts had complained about
being bullied by Misha.
But last night he apologised, saying: "I shouldn't have used the word
'bullied' to Misha. In the heat of the moment I got a bit carried away and
I'm sorry." The singer today admitted she had been a "playground bully" but
insisted she had turned over a new leaf.
The X Factor's Saturday night live show was beaten by its BBC1 rival
Strictly Come Dancing for the second week running when the two shows went
head to head.
Strictly pulled in an average of 9.4 million viewers, with 9.5 million
watching it when it overlapped with The X Factor for 15 minutes, which had
8.3 million.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "We are absolutely delighted by our figures and
delighted that more people are tuning in to see our celebrity dancers each
week." An ITV spokesman said: "ITV1 was the most-watched channel across all
time and peak time on Sunday."
