New Drama For BBC
One
Timothy Spall and Joanna Page are to star in The Syndicate, a
new five-part drama for BBC One written by Kay Mellor.
The Syndicate follows five workers at a cut-price supermarket in Leeds whose
lives are turned upside down after they jointly win the lottery, going from
facing redundancy and battling the present economic downturn to having more
money than they ever dreamt of.
Timothy Spall plays supermarket manager Bob, whose newfound wealth cannot
mask his persistent health problems. Joanna Page plays single mother Leanne,
who although welcomes her financial freedom, is worried about the
consequences that the win will bring.
The Syndicate is written by Kay Mellor, whose previous
critically acclaimed dramas include: Band Of Gold, Playing The Field, Fat
Friends, The Chase and A Passionate Woman.
Speaking about The Syndicate Kay Mellor said: “I was inspired to write it
after a friend of mine was told she was losing her job. With a mortgage to
pay and outstanding debts her only hope was to win the lottery. It made me
think how many people were thinking the same. As cuts hit hard we're left
with only a dream of six numbered balls deciding our fate - what strange
times we are living in! Its both funny and tragic; a perfect recipe for
great drama."
The cast also includes: Katherine Dow Blyton, Amy Beth Hayes, Clare Higgins,
Judy Parfitt, Christian Contreras and Lorraine Ashborne.

X Factor Fix
X Factor host Dermot O’Leary has denied the show is “a fix”
after controversial teenager Frankie Cocozza survived another week.

Boyband The Risk and singer Johnny Robinson were voted off the ITV1
programme in a double elimination yesterday.
The phrase “fix factor” started trending on Twitter after Gary Barlow’s act,
19-year-old Cocozza stayed, despite being favourite to get the chop
following a lacklustre performance.
O’Leary defended the show, saying: “Can tell most of you aren’t happy, but
if the acts don’t get the votes they go out.
“It’s that simple. Talk of a fix is a joke.”
The presenter’s tweet comes as Louis Walsh and Barlow are said to be no
longer speaking behind the scenes.
The pair were seen arguing on Saturday night’s live programme, telling each
other to “shut up”, after Walsh criticised Cocozza’s performance.
Sunday’s results show was watched by a peak audience of 14.2 million, a 47%
share of viewing.
ITV said the average of 12.3 million for the double eviction show made it
the most-watched episode of this series.
The Risk were axed after they were told they had received the lowest number
of votes from viewers.
Singer Robinson and Kitty Brucknell had to take part in a sing-off and the
judges all decided to save Brucknell.
