X Factor Vote

The public will decide who returns to The X Factor and all profits from this one off phone vote donated to Help For Heroes.

The four X Factor contestants who have never faced the public vote after being eliminated by the judges in the first Live Show have the chance to return to the competition this Saturday by facing a public vote. With a place in the show up for grabs following Frankie Cocozza’s departure, the public will decide via a phone vote which one will re-join the competition.

The four contestants, one from each category: 2 Shoes (Groups); Amelia Lily (Girls); James Michael (Boys); and Jonjo Kerr (Over 25s) left the competition on the first live show.

The act with the most votes will re-enter The X Factor and perform live on Saturday night's show alongside the six remaining acts left in the competition.

This week's theme is Queen and Lady Gaga so each of the returning acts will prepare a song – but only one will get the chance to perform it on Saturday night’s show which starts at 20:15 on ITV1.

ITV and producers talkbackThames and Syco have decided that all profits from the phone vote, at least 22 pence per call, will be donated to the charity Help for Heroes.

Elaine Bedell, ITV’s Director of Entertainment said: “In these unprecedented circumstances I’m pleased that we are giving viewers the opportunity to vote for one act to return to Saturday’s show and that all profits from this vote will be donated to Help for Heroes.”

Voting started today at 16:00.

New Drama For BBC One

Dervla Kirwan and Ewen Bremner join Christopher Eccleston in an original four-part drama for BBC One, called The Fuse, written by Bill Gallagher.

Also appearing are Andrew Scott, Lyndsey Marshal, Rebecca Callard, and Branka Katic.

The Fuse follows Daniel Demoys (Eccleston), a stranger in his own life. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him and wife, Alex (Kirwan), and their three children. The fallout from his alcohol-fuelled actions prove agonising for all around him.

When Daniel wakes up after another drunken night, he realises that he might be responsible for a murder. A dramatic act of redemption buys him public adoration, so much so that he has become a candidate in the race for Mayor, persuaded by council official Jerry Durrans (Bremner), and lawyer sister Lucy (Marshal).

Christopher Eccleston said: “Bill Gallagher has written a fantastic four episode drama about obsession, addiction and redemption. I’m very excited about the role of Daniel Demoys and to be working with Red Production Company and BBC One”.

Filming has started and will take place on location in Liverpool and Manchester, for a Spring 2012 transmission.

Call To Save Somerset's AM Service

The leaders of two councils are calling on the BBC not to switch off one of its local radio transmitters in Somerset.

At present BBC Somerset transmits on both 95.5 FM and 1566 AM but the BBC Trust wants to switch off the AM service where it is duplicated on FM.

But councillors from Taunton Deane and West Somerset say up to 30,000 people are unable to receive the FM service.

A BBC spokeswoman said it was currently examining the impact of the withdrawal of its AM service in Somerset.

She added: "We have said that we'll end medium wave (AM) transmissions, except for stations where listeners depend on medium wave as an alternative to FM.

"Any decision will be subject to the approval of the BBC Trust who are currently consulting on BBC local radio proposals."

The leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council, Councillor John Williams, said the BBC Trust's plans would not work in Somerset.

He said some 30,000 people living in the lee of the Quantocks and Blackdown hills are shielded from the FM transmitter located on Penn Hill, near Wells.

"There's a huge swathe of our borough, including major settlements such as Wiveliscombe, Norton Fitzwarren, Cotford St Luke, Bishops Lydeard and Milverton, who will effectively be disenfranchised if the medium wave transmitter in Taunton is switched off."

Both Mr Williams and Councillor Tim Taylor, from West Somerset Council, said in times of emergency people tuned into BBC Somerset.

"It could be which schools are closed because of snow or which roads are impassable due to flooding.

"As councils, we are very aware of the need to make savings but this proposal by the BBC would have a huge impact on people who value and rely on their local radio station."
