Sir Cliff Hits Out at Radio Station Snub
Sir Cliff Richard has blasted a new 1960s radio station for
banning his hits - and accused programme bosses of "lying to the public" by
erasing him from history.
The 71-year-old - whose Christmas single Millennium Prayer topped the charts
in 1999 despite scant airplay - has been barred from the playlist of new
service Absolute Radio 60s.
The station - which launches on November 22 and describes itself as "Home of
The Beatles, Stones and Motown" - claimed Sir Cliff's songs were not cool
enough to make the cut.
DJ Pete Mitchell said: "His songs don't fit the cool sound of the swinging
sixties we're trying to create on our new station.
"We believe timeless acts of the decade that remain relevant today are The
Beatles, The Stones, The Doors and The Who, not Sir Cliff."
However, the Summer Holiday singer said: "What they're doing is they're
lying to themselves, and more importantly they're lying to the public.
"You cannot count me out. I sold more singles in the UK than The Beatles
did, and more singles than any other artist on the planet, in Britain."
He added: "They can do that if they want to, there's nothing I can do. But
what they're forgetting is that The Beatles didn't start it here - I started
five years before the Beatles."
The new station is a sister service for Absolute Radio.
Sir Cliff - who is currently promoting his new DVD, Cliff Richard The
Soulicious Tour Live At The 02 - revealed that despite the furore
surrounding his last festive song, he would be happy to bring out another
Christmas track.

The Borrowers
Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood, Christopher Eccleston, Sharon
Horgan, Robert Sheehan and Aisling Loftus star in The Borrowers for BBC One
this Christmas.
▪

Written by Ben Vanstone, the 90-minute film is a modern
adaptation of Mary Norton’s classic children’s books that brings the world
of the tiny Borrowers who live under our floorboards into the twenty-first
century.
Aisling Loftus plays Arrietty Clock, a head-strong teenage Borrower who is
desperate to explore life outside her hidden family home. Her parents, Pod
and Homily Clock – played by Christopher Eccleston and Sharon Horgan - are
terrified of the world of the ‘Human Beans’ and are fiercely protective of
their daughter. Arrietty sneaks upstairs one night and befriends James, a
lonely boy who lives above her in the house with his father, played by Shaun
Dooley and Grandmother, played by Victoria Wood. This leads to a world of
trouble when James unwittingly reveals the borrowers’ home to his formidable
Grandmother, and the Clocks are forced to venture into the wide world…
Grandma Driver knows the ‘little people’ exist, she’s always known, and is
determined to hunt them out of her house. Stephen Fry plays scientist
Professor Mildeye who also knows of the existence of the ‘little people’.
Determined to restore his reputation and resurrect his academic career,
he’ll go to any lengths to capture them and reveal them to the world.
Robbie Sheehan plays Spiller, a leather jacketed tearaway who takes quite a
shine to Arrietty. She’s not quite sure what to make of this, but when her
parents are captured by the scheming Professor Mildeye, she is forced to
enlist both Spiller’s and 'human bean' James’ help. They go on a series of
daring adventures to try and outsmart Mildeye and return the Clock family to
their former home in time for Christmas.

EastEnders -
Olympic Flame
The Olympic Flame will stop off in Walford, the home of
EastEnders, on its way to the London 2012 Games, it has been announced.

The luck of hapless character Billy Mitchell has finally
changed as he will get to carry it past soap landmarks such as the market,
the launderette and the Queen Vic as the Olympic Torch relay hits Albert
Square on July 23, 2012.
The relay will pass through the fictional London borough of Walford ahead of
the July 27 opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium, London 2012 said.
The Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, will share Walford’s E20
postcode after the Games.
Actor Perry Fenwick, who plays Mitchell, said: “When we first discussed the
storyline, my initial thought was that I’ll now have to get fit.
“While this may be a fictional one-off for Billy Mitchell, it’s a real once
in a lifetime opportunity for me and I am thrilled that Walford and Albert
Square will be part of this amazing event.”
Fenwick’s character Mitchell and fellow EastEnders favourite Fatboy were
nominated for one of the coveted spots to become a torchbearer – but
Mitchell got the green light.
A total of 1,018 communities will be visited during the 70-day Torch relay,
from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, to St Helier on Jersey, and as far
east as Lowestoft in Suffolk to Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, in the west.
It will travel about 8,000 miles and be carried by 8,000 inspirational
torchbearers, London 2012 said.
It is designed to come within 10 miles of 95% of the population. It will go
through every English county and every local authority area in Scotland,
Northern Ireland and Wales.

the words 'Jim fixed it for me'.
The special will be hosted by EastEnders actor Shane Ritchie who has called
it "compulsive television".
Sir Jimmy died earlier this month and was buried last week in Scarborough.
BBC One controller Danny Cohen said: "I think it will be a great tribute to
Jimmy to recreate his famous show as a Christmas treat for audiences."
