BBC Licence Collection
The Capita Group plc has today been appointed - subject to
contract - to a new BBC contract to handle TV Licensing's collection,
administration and enforcement services for the next eight years.
The contract - which comes into force on July 1 2012 – replaces two existing
contracts held by Capita* and iQor*.
The new contract is expected to be worth approximately £560m to Capita and
represents savings to the BBC of over £220m over the eight years of the
contract. These savings allow more money to be spent on BBC programmes and
services.
Zarin Patel, BBC Chief Financial Officer, said: "This contract represents
great value for the licence fee payer. Capita’s bid was the best both in
terms of innovation and efficiencies and so offered best value for money.
The success of recent efforts by the BBC and TV Licensing to encourage
people to pay via Direct Debit and use self-serve channels such as the web
has enabled us to re-structure the new contract to realise the savings
benefits. Additionallly, savings have been achieved by consolidating what
were previously two contracts.”

BBC Apologises For
Jeremy Clarkson Comment
The BBC has apologised after Jeremy Clarkson declared that he
would like to see striking public sector workers "shot" in front of their
families.
The Top Gear presenter made his comments on BBC's The One Show on the
evening of Britain's biggest public sector strikes in 30 years.
He said of the strikers: "I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside
and execute them in front of their families.
"I mean, how dare they go on strike when they've got these gilt-edged
pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work
for a living."
The broadcaster's comments sparked hundreds of angry comments on Twitter.
A BBC spokesman said: "'he One Show apologised at the end of the show to
viewers who may have been offended by Jeremy Clarkson's comments."
Jon Trickett, Labour's shadow minister for the Cabinet Office, said: "No one
wants these strikes but most of today's strikers are mums, not militants.
"Clarkson should apologise. And the Prime Minister should make clear he
disassociates himself from the distasteful remarks uttered by one of his
friends."

Waveguide -
26 Years Online
It is 26 years ago today since Waveguide officially first saw
the light of day as part of Viewfax 258 on the viewdata network Prestel,
operated by British Telecom.
At that time, Waveguide was published on a weekly basis,
compiled in Surrey, it was sent on floppy disk for uploading to the Prestel
network in the Birmingham headquarters of Viewfax.
Waveguide saw the first sparks of life in June 1985 as Radio Ga Ga, a
small database of radio and television news on Micronet, a viewdata user
group mainly for computer enthusiasts, available via the Prestel dial-up
service.
Waveguide became available on the Internet in 1997.
John Cull has edited Waveguide since it was first published.
Below are a few memories from the past 26 years.
