UEFA Euro 2012 Broadcast Rights

UEFA announced today the appointment of the BBC and ITV as the official broadcasters of UEFA EURO 2012 in the United Kingdom.

All 31 matches will be transmitted live across BBC and ITV. The broadcasters will further exploit all 31 matches via their respective internet and mobile platforms.

A daily highlights programme will also be shown on each match day during the tournament and the BBC has the right to provide extensive coverage of the competition across its radio channels.

The BBC and ITV also confirmed the full split of matches between the two broadcasters across the tournament.

The broadcasters will show a total of 16 matches each including the final, which will be broadcast by both ITV and the BBC.

Niall Sloane, ITV Controller of Sport said: “Major events such as the Euro 2012 Championships have huge significance for our viewers and attract some of the biggest audiences on television. I’m delighted that ITV has secured an outstanding selection of games through the tournament, which includes England’s opening game against France as well as a potential peak time group decider against hosts Ukraine.

“ITV1 will also be the home of some terrific clashes between the top teams in Europe including Spain v Ireland, Spain v Italy, Portugal v Holland and Ireland v Croatia.”

Philip Bernie, BBC Head of TV Sport said: "The BBC is delighted to be showing the UEFA European Football Championship, a huge football event, which, along with the London Olympics, should ensure a fantastic sporting summer for BBC viewers.

"We are very happy with the live matches on BBC One, as they give us a strong climax to the event, with both semi finals, as well as England's quarter final if they progress. We also have some very appetising group games, including England's second match, against Sweden, in peak time, Ireland's final match, against Italy, and heavyweight clashes between Holland and Germany and Germany and Portugal."

BBC Denies Misleading Frozen Planet Viewers

The BBC has denied misleading Frozen Planet viewers with footage of newborn polar bear cubs filmed in an animal park, rather than in the wild.

An episode of the series featured the cubs in a den with their mother, with many people assuming they were born and filmed in the Arctic.

But the cubs were actually in a Dutch animal park, as revealed in behind-the-scenes footage on the show's website.

The BBC said the filming was "standard practice" for natural history shows.

A BBC spokesperson said: "This particular sequence would be impossible to film in the wild.

"The commentary accompanying the sequence is carefully worded so it doesn't mislead the audience and the way the footage was captured is clearly explained on the programme website."

Speaking to ITV1's This Morning programme, Frozen Planet presenter Sir David Attenborough said: "If you had tried to put a camera in the wild in a polar bear den, she would either have killed the cub or she would have killed the cameraman.

He added that an explanation about the animal park footage would have ruined the atmosphere of the sequence.

"It's not falsehood and we don't keep it secret either," said Sir David.

Viewing figures for last night's X Factor final were down four million on the previous year, figures showed today.

The ITV1 programme had an average audience of 13.1 million, compared to the 17.2 million who watched as Matt Cardle triumphed in the 2010 competition.

And it was the lowest average audience for the finale of the series since 2007, when Leon Jackson won the show.

Sunday night's peak audience for The X Factor - which has been down on the previous year throughout much of the series - was also four million fewer, drawing 15.5 million at its height.n.

ITV pointed out that BBC One rival Strictly Come Dancing had averaged 9.7 million viewers this series.

The semi-final of the dance show had a higher audience than the first leg of X Factor's final on Saturday night.

In 2009, the final edition of The X Factor pulled in an average 15.5 million - equal to this year's peak, while in 2008 it drew 13.2 million.
