Blue Peter Presenter Breaks Record

Helen Skelton has reached the halfway point in her South Pole challenge and looks to have added another world record to her haul.

The Blue Peter presenter attempted to set a record for the fastest 100km kite surf, covering the distance across Antarctica in seven hours and 55 minutes.

Skelton, 28, has completed the equivalent of heading from London to Northampton in temperatures which plunged to -48degC and she has completed the journey through tummy troubles, snow storms, blisters and dehydration.

The Guinness World Record officials have clarified that she has broken the World Record with her kite surfing stunt. The 500-mile dash to the South Pole for Sport Relief has now passed the 250-mile mark in seven days.

Skelton has previously set two records for her solo kayak along the Amazon for Sport Relief in 2010 and added: "250 miles down, 250 miles to go. I know I've got a lot of hard work still to do, but at least I am closer to the end than the beginning now. Every single day here is tough so all I can do is take each one at a time and get through it."

TV Chef Thanks Fans For Their Support

Antony Worrall Thompson has thanked fans for their support after his shoplifting experience.

The television chef who was given a formal caution by police for stealing cheese and wine on five separate occasions in 16 days from a Tesco store in Henley, Oxfordshire in England - said he has been inundated with messages on his website.

He told a newspaper: "We had 25,000 messages of support from my website yesterday and loads more have been left on both my phone and my wife's - so much so that my phone's broken now.

"It's extraordinary and unwarranted. I expected people to condemn me but about nine out of 10 messages are sympathetic which I find incredible and heart-warming."

Worrall Thompson also revealed he and his wife Jay will see a therapist together to help him deal with his issues.

He said: "I'm seeing someone with my wife Jay, and I'll see what comes from the first session. I'm sure there will be other sessions to go to afterwards or other people that I should see.

"This is only the first step but I want to address the problem thoroughly. I'm sure the reason I've done this is my head but I don't know how to open it up.

"I need to see if there's an explanation that I don't know about. The psychoanalyst I'm seeing has been recommended by a friend and I know he has 35 years experience in solving issues of the mind."

BBC Chief Defends Nudity

BBC drama chief Ben Stephenson has defended nude scenes in the series Sherlock, telling journalists that broadcasting before the watershed “doesn’t mean you have to be dull”.

Around 100 people complained about the racy footage of actress Lara Pulver who played the character Irene Adler in the New Year’s Day episode.

Stephenson told the Broadcasting Press Guild: “We thought about it incredibly carefully and obviously it got 100 complaints and 10.6 million people watched it”.

The plot, an update of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia, starred Pulver as a whip-wielding dominatrix and included nude pre-watershed scenes with her and Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the master detective.

The BBC One programme was watched by more than 10 million viewers.

Stephenson said: “We had lots of conversations about it and I think we were right in thinking it’s a bit of a cheeky show and that just because you’re on pre-watershed doesn’t mean you have to be dull.”

He added: “You actually saw more of Benedict than you did of Lara.”

Stephenson also revealed he decided to commission the show despite being told it would be a flop.

He said: “We did some research on Sherlock before we made it and we were told it would not work, that it would get an old audience, it would get a small audience.”

Sean Bean In BBC One's Accused

Sean Bean, Anna Maxwell Martin and Stephen Graham are to star in Jimmy McGovern’s series Accused on BBC One in 2012.

Bean plays English teacher Simon, whose alter ego Tracie's unconventional quest for love entangles him in an affair that leads inexorably to a terrible crime of passion. Stephen Graham stars as Tony, a satellite and aerial engineer, and Rachel Leskovac plays his wife of 12 years, beautician Karen.

Commenting on his new role Bean said: “I’ve wanted to work on a Jimmy McGovern drama for a while and I think this cracking script really delivers a powerful, emotional drama for the audience."

Two episodes of Accused were filmed last autumn.

Accused was re-commissioned by BBC One Controller Danny Cohen and Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson.
