George Gilbey Inquest
George Gilbey died aged 40 from traumatic head and torso injuries after falling 80ft, a coroner heard.
The Gogglebox star and electrician was working in Shoeburyness, Essex, on 27 March when he fell while working. He died at the scene, EGL Homecare in Shoebury, Southend-on-Sea, was cordoned off by police at the time.
It was said at a short inquest hearing held in Chelmsford that Gilbey fell through a skylight.
‘[Gilbey] was working on a roof when he fell through a plastic skylight and landed on the ground below,’ said the coroner’s officer Deborah Frost.
His injuries were ‘consistent with a fall from height’, the post-mortem examination said.
A man was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter but has since been released under investigation.
Lincoln Brookes, senior coroner on the case, said proceedings would adjourn for four months at the request of Essex Police.
Gilbey appeared on the Channel 4 reality show between 2013 and 2018 with his mum Linda and stepdad Pete McGarry, who died aged 71 from bowel cancer three years ago. The family were filmed reacting to TV shows, and their down-to-earth nature and funny quips made them popular contributors. He entered Celebrity Big Brother in 2014 and finished in fourth place.
